Gervase Thompson Named WIAC's Nominee for DIIICA Men's Sports Student-Athlete of the Year

MADISON, Wis.--The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) has announced its nominees for the Division III Commissioner's Association (DIIICA) Student-Athletes of the Year awards.
 
UW-Stout's Gervase Thompson and UW-Eau Claire's Mitchell Stegeman have been chosen as the conference nominees for the DIIICA Men's Sport Student-Athlete of the Year.
 
To be eligible, a nominee must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport; must have completed eligibility in his primary sport; must have earned his undergraduate degree no later than the summer 2024 term; and must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale.

A native of Brule, Wis. (Northwestern), Thompson was a member of the football team and maintained a 4.00 grade point average, while majoring in mechanical engineering and applied physics. He was a 2024 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society honoree. In 2023, Thompson was a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and received the WIAC Football Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award. He is a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection (2022, 2023). A nine-time member of UW-Stout's Dean's List, Thompson was a Blue Devil Academic Top Scholar in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
 
A team captain, Thompson received All-WIAC second team honors in 2023, after tying for the team lead with 4.5 quarterback sacks and finishing second with 60 tackles. He was an All-WIAC honorable mention selection in 2022.
 
Thompson was a member of UW-Stout's Honors College, as well as the Multicultural Student Organization.
 
Stegeman and Thompson were selected from a group of individuals that included: UW-La Crosse's Ethan Gregg (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas - cross country, track & field); UW-Platteville's Justin Blazek (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley - football); and UW-Whitewater's Will Morgan (Naperville, Ill./Central - soccer).
