Anna Mutch hit a clutch fadeaway three as time expired to lift the Blue Devils over the Vikings of Berry College, 58-55. The game was knotted at 55 with just two seconds left with the Blue Devils inbounding the ball from the sideline. Mutch received the inbounds pass well beyond the three-point arc and shot what would become one of the most incredible shots in Blue Devil basketball history. The gym erupted, as the Blue Devils won 58-55 thanks to the buzzer-beating heroics of
Anna Mutch.
Â
The game leading up to the improbable ending was an offensive struggle. Stout found themselves trailing eight to ten after the first quarter. The eight-point first quarter is the lowest scoring quarter for the Blue Devils this season, and the lowest since their second-round victory over Puget Sound last year. The Blue Devils were able to find their shot in the second quarter, with 25 points, turning a two-point deficit after the first quarter into an eight-point 33-25 lead at the half.
Â
Stout led for almost the entirety of the second half, until the Vikings made a couple free throws with just 1:31 left in the 4
th quarter to take a 52-51 lead. Rosella Willie responded with a three pointer to take the lead right back with 1:15 left to go.
Sam Schaeffer tacked on a free throw with just ten seconds left to give the Blue Devils a three-point lead. Sylvia Kahoro of Berry made a game-tying three with just two seconds left, which looked like it would send the game to overtime. Coach Iverson took a timeout to advance the ball and draw up what would be the game-winning play.
Sam Schaeffer was able to find
Anna Mutch who put up a highlight reel shot that will be remembered for a long time.
