ST. PAUL, MINN. – The UW-Stout Blue Devils (0-1-0) fell 3-0 to Macalester College (1-0-0) in the season opener Friday evening.
Macalester pressured early, scoring goals in the fifth and seventh minutes to quickly jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Scots kept possession in the Stout half of the field for most of the first half, totaling 10 shots with five on target.
Macalester was able to add a third goal in the 40th minute on a unlucky bounce for the Blue Devils. The ball bounced off of the Stout defender and straight up into the air. The deflection caught the Stout goalkeeper out of position and when the ball came back down to the pitch it bounced into the net to give Macalester a 3-0 advantage just before halftime.
Neither team was unable to find the back of the net in the second half. Macalester totaled 17 shots with eight on target, while Stout managed just three balls on target.
