PLATTEVILLE - The Blue Devils dropped the season finale 41-24 at UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon.
Turnovers, penalties and big plays hurt Stout (4-6, 2-5) in the road loss to the Pioneers (6-4, 4-3).Â
Stout turned the ball over six times, committed nine penalties for 96 yards and allowed two rushing touchdowns of over 72 yards, but still was within striking distance late in the game. '
One Stout's first possession of the game, the Blue Devils fumbled to set the Pioneers up on the Blue Devil 27 yard line, two plays later UWP scored to quickly go up 7-0.Â
Stout responded with a good drive moving the ball to the UWP 25 yard line but
Mitch Waechter's pass was intercepted. The blue Devils returned the favor on the next play when
Mason Priebe intercepted Priami's pass. Stout was unable to capitalize, missing a 40 yard field goal attempt. The teams traded punts, before Zackary Bothun carried the ball 81 yards for a score to give UWP a 14-0 lead. After a couple more punts by the Blue Devils, UWP's Tag Habedank scored on another big run, going 72 yards for the score and UWP led 21-0 midway through the second. Stout put together a 12 play 64 yard drive and scored on a fourth and ten play when Waechter found
Adam Moen in the end one for a 30 yard score. Platteville put their first sustained drive together and scored on a 24 yard strike down the left sideline. The extra point was blocked by
Daniel Walker UWP led 27-7 with 50 seconds left until halftime. Stout tried to get the two-minute offense moving byt Waechter's hail mary attempt was intercepted in the endzone.Â
On UWP's second play of the third quarter Gervas Thompson intercepted Priami's pass and return it to the 15 yard line. Unfortunately, Stout would have to settle for a field goal and trailed 27-10. Stout forced a three and out and a bad punt and took over inside the redzone. Waechter found
Tucker Haakonson for a 17 yard scoring strike and Stout cut the Platteville lead to 27-17, just four minutes into the second half.Â
Stout forced another punt and moved the ball into UWP 32 yard line, but Waechter was intercepted to end the scoring threat.Â
Platteville open the fourth quarter with a seven play 86 yard drive to regain the two possession advantage at 31-17. Stout responded on a four play 75 yard drive.
Carter Fonger took the handoff and raced 45 yards to the UWP 30. Waechter found
Patrick Corcoran for a 33 yard score and Stout trailed 34-24 with 11:22 to play.Â
Platteville put the final nail in the coffin when they scored to extend the lead to 41-24 with 3:53 to play. Stout moved the ball back into the redzone, but was intercepted to end the threat.
Waechter threw for a career-high 353 yards on 32-56 passing. He had three touchdowns and five interceptionsÂ
Arthur Cox had 11 catches for 103 yards.
Cannon Griner led Stout with 11 tackles. Priebe and
Richie Murphy each had eight tacklesÂ
