MENOMONIE - The UW-Stout Blue Devils (2-3, 0-2) fell 48-46 in double overtime to UW-Oshkosh (3-2, 1-1) Saturday afternoon at Williams Stadium.
The Blue Devils were unable to convert a two-point conversion in the second overtime as the Titans were able to rally for the comeback win.
It took stout just 52 seconds to get on the board.
Mitch Waechter found
Patrick Corcoran for a 41 yard reception on the first play of the game. two plays later
Matt Pomietlo scampered into the endzone from 11 yards out to give Stout the 7-0 lead.
On Oshkosh's first offensive play
Nate Rewald forced a fumble and
Cannon Griner recovered the loose ball and the Blue Devils were in business at the Titan 30 yard line. seven plays later, Pomietlo rushed for his second score of the game, this time from two yards out and the Blue Devils were up 14-0 early.
Oshkosh responded with an eight play 71 yard dive to cut the lead to 14-6 after a missed point after attempt. Corcoran wasted no time putting the Blue Devils back up by two scores when he took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the house. The point after bounced off the upright at the Blue Devils led 20-6
Oshkosh again had long scoring drive of nine plays, 81 yards to bring the score back to within seven at 20-13
Davonte Evans returned the kickoff 48yards to the Oshkosh 32 yard line to set up the Bl;ue Devils with a short field.
Luke Cool connected on a 32 yard field goal to push the Stout lead to 10.
The Blue Devils were able to stop the Titans on fourth down and drove the ball 68 yards on 12 plays increasing the lead to 30-13 when Waechter found
Ben Karls for a five yard score. The Titans were able to score just before halftime to bring the score to 30-20 in the high scoring first half.
Oshkosh opened the second half with a methodical 14 play 70 yard drive that lasted six and half minutes and the Titans trimmed the lead tyo three at 30-27. The Blue Devils were unable to put a drive together and the games first punt took place with five minutes left in the third quarter. The Titans drove again but the Blue Devils turned them over on downs to keep the three point lead. Pomietlo found a hole on the first play and rushed 56 yards down to the 1-yard line. Pomietlo then got a hug push from the offensive line and scored his third touchdown of the game, this time from a yard out.
Oshkosh put another long drive together and scored to keep it a one possession game at 37-34. Stout went three and out and Oshkosh started moving the ball. But the drive stalled and the Titans came away with no points when the 23 yard field goal was wide left. Stout again went three and out and the Titans took over with just under six minutes to play. UWO moved the ball into the redzone and this time connected on a 32 yard field goal attempt to tie the game at 37.
Stout had 1:48 to try and set up a walk-off field goal, The Blue Devils were able to quickly get the ball in field goal range, But Cool's 55 yard attempt into the wind banged high off the right upright and the game went into overtime.
The teams traded field goals in the first overtime to enter the second overtime at 40. Oshkosh scored on their second play and converted the two-point conversion to take their first lead of the game at 48-40. Waechter found a hole up the middle to score from six yards out to set up the two-point try. But his pass was behind Corcoran in teh back of the endzone and the Titans stole a win away from the Blue Devils.
Waechter was 16-26 for 186 yards and a score, he rushed for 36 yards and a score.
Matt Pomietlo carried the ball 19 times for 112 yards and three scores.
Patrick Corcoran had seven receptions for 94 yards.
Oshkosh's Kobe Berghammer was 42-52 for 466 yards and five touchdowns. He rushed for 105 yards and score. Trae Tetzlaff had 17 catches for 155 yards and a score.
Stout's
Cannon Griner had 19 total tackles a pass break up and a fumble recovery.
Mack Klafter and
Gervase Thompson each had 11 tackles.
Nate Rewald had 10 tackles.
The Titans totaled 618 yards of offense to the Blue Devils 344
