Blue Devils Fall to No.5 Warhawks 37-20

WHITEWATER -  The Blue Devils fell 37-20 at No. 5 UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon. 

Stout (3-4, 1-3) fell behind 24-0 in the second quarter and was able to get within 11 at 24-13 midway through the third, but Whitewater (6-1, 3-1) was able score the next 3 points to seal their 21st straight win over the Blue Devils. 

The Blue Devil defense kept the game close early as the offense struggled to find a rhythm. After a first down pass on the first play of the game, Stout had to punt three plays later. UWW was able to move the ball deep into Stout territory, but the 11 play drive stalled on fourth down and the Blue Devils took over on their own 23 yard line. Stout went three and out but the Warhawks fumbled the punt and Blue Devils took over in plus territory. The Blue Devils again went three and out but pinned the Warhawks at their own five. UWW was able to break the scoreless tie with a 30 yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter. 
UWW forced another punt and took over near midfield, five plays later the Warhawks scored on a 6yard run from the quarterback to take a 10-0 lead. Stout was forced to punt on their next possession and the Warhawks Ogden scored his second touchdown on a 28-yard run to extend the lead to 17-0. The Blue Devils were able to put a drive together but settled for a punt from the UWW 35 yard line. Whitewater scored on the next play, and 80 pass to take a commanding 24-0 lead. Both teams traded punts, Stout's seventh of the half,  and the Blue Devils took over on their own 17 yard line with 79 seconds left before halftime. Stout Moved the ball to midfield before a Mitch Waechter 18 yard scramble set the Blue Devils up within striking distance with under 20 seconds to play, Waechter then faked the spike and hit Tucker Haakonson down the sideline to the two-yard line with five seconds left. Stout took one shot in the endzone before Luke Cool made a 19-yard field goal as the half expired to put the Blue Devils on the board at 24-3. 

The Stout defense had a tackle for loss and sack to force a three and out by the Warhawks on the first possession of the second half. Waechter found Arthur Cox and Patrick Corcoran to move Stout into the red zone. The drive stalled but Cool added 32 yard field goal to cut the lead to 24-6. Three plays later Canon Griner picked off Ogden at midfield to set the Blue Devils up with good field position, 10 plays later Waechter connected with Will Knutson on the left side of the endzone for a 20-yard score to Bring the Blue Devils within 11 at 24-13 with 5:50 to play int he third quarter. 

UWW stopped the Stout scoring streak with an 11 play drive that ended with a 33 yard field goal to extend the lead to 27-13. Stout punted on the ensuing possession, But UWW muffed the punt and the Blue Devils recovered at the Warhawk 48, UWW was flagged for roughing the kicker and Stout had first and ten at the 33. Stout turned the ball over on downs when Waechter's 4th and two pass was dropped in the flat.  After Stout forced a UWW punt, Wachter's pass was intercepted at midfield. Whitewater was able to turn the turnover into points  seven plays later on a nine yard pass to give UWW a 34-13 lead. 

Stout worked a 14 play 75 yard drive in the final minutes of the game that culminated with Waechter scampering in from seven yards out to make the score 37-20 with just over a minute to play. 

Waechter finished 23 of 53 with a touchdown and an interception. He rushed for 47 yards and score. 
Haakonson caught eight passes for 92 yards. Cox had eight catches for 85 yards. 
Blaine Seidl had 12 tackles, two tackles for loss and a pass break-up.
The Warhawks Alec Ogden was 23-40 with two touchdowns and an interception. He led Whitewater on the ground with 90 yards rushing and two scores. 

Whitewater totaled 441 yards of offense and the Blue Devils had 338.

The Blue Devils will host UW-River Falls next weekend, Saturday, Oct. 28 in the home finale. The Blue Devils will hold a short ceremony before kickoff honoring their seniors.
