Blue Devils break school record with points, beat Crown College 66-6

MENOMONIE (September 24, 2022) - In the home opener, Stout went on to beat Crown College (0-4) with a score of 66-6. The Blue Devils broke a school record by scoring 66 points in the game. UW-Stout (2-1) scored 65 points against Waldorf University in a 65-7 win in 2004. 

On the opening kickoff, the Blue Devil's Carter Fonger took the ball nearly to the house, but was tackled on the five yard line. On the next play, Chase Hughes took a handoff in for a five yard touchdown score. With the extra point by Luke Cool, the score was 7-0 only 14 seconds into the game. 

After a three and out by Crown College, the Blue Devils took a drive for eight plays and 50 yards in for the touchdown. Hughes rushed for his second touchdown, this time from seven yards out. 

On third down for Crown's next drive, Quinton Williams recorded a big third down sack to force the Polars punt. The Blue Devils were 51 yards to the end zone and only needed four plays to score another touchdown. Sean Borgerding threw a pass to Arthur Cox out in the flat. Cox leaped over a defender at the five yard line and walked into the end zone to make the score 21-0 in favor of Stout. 

During Crown's next drive, the Blue Devil's Carter Johnson intercepted a pass from the Polar's quarterback. On the next drive for the Blue Devils, Jacob Kopacz took a handoff and scored a 10 yard rushing touchdown. 

After the first quarter, the score saw 28-0 in favor of the Blue Devils. 

After another three and out by the Blue Devil's defense, the next play saw a 63 yard touchdown, but was negated by a penalty. 

With 5:54 left in the first half, Ben Tolkinen rushed for an eight yard scamper into the end zone. After the Blue Devil touchdown, Stout kicked it off to Crown and recovered a fumble. The next play after the fumble recovery, Mitch Waechter rushed for nine yards into the endzone to make the score 42-0. 

With 2:52 left in the first half, Fonger took a long run and scored a 51 yard touchdown. At halftime, the Blue Devils were leading the Polars 49-0

At halftime, Stout had 16 first downs to Crown's zero. The Blue Devils led in total offensive yards 323 to 4. 

In the second half, Crown received the ball. In their first drive of the half, Elijah Odom threw a 34 yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Anfield to get on the scoreboard. The Polars tried for a two-point conversion but failed. The scoreboard read 49-6. 

In the next drive for the Blue Devils, Stout took 12 plays for 47 yards to end with a 38-yard field goal by Cool. 

In the fourth quarter, Crown's quarterback was intercepted by Gabe Kramer. After the interception, Josh Schlangen scampered to score a six yard rushing touchdown to make the game 59-6. With 2:31 left in the game, JD Bates scored an eight yard rushing touchdown. Cool's ninth extra point of the game broke the school single game scoring record and tied the school record for most extra points in a game. Cool was 9 for 9 in extra points. 

The Blue Devils held Crown on their last possession and the final score was 66-6. 

Blue Devil's were led on the ground by Ben Tolkinen with 82 yards. Tolkinen also scored a rushing touchdown. Sean Borgerding led the passing attack going seven for eight with 83 yards and a touchdown. Parker Fossum led the receivers with 37 yards. 

Stout also tied the school rushing touchdown record with eight and Stout amassed 389 yards rushing by 10 different players. Chase Hughes scored two rushing TDs and eight different players scored a touchdown. Tokinen, Kopacz, Bates, Hughes and Waechter all scored their first collegiate TDs. 

Stout finished the game with 497 yards of total offense. Crown finished with 163 yards of total offense. The Blue Devils sacked Crown quarterback Elijah Odom, who played the entire game, three times. 

Next for the Blue Devils is the War on I-94 rivalry with UW-Eau Claire. The game will be played at Don & Nona WIlliams Stadium Saturday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m.
