LAST TIME OUT: GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE:   For the second straight year Gustavus opened the season at Buena Vista with a stellar offensive performance, but unlike last year's matchup, the Gusties played a more complete game with a 62-20 victory Sept. 3. All 20 Beaver points were scored in the fourth quarter. The Gusties used the large scoring margin to play a number of second- and third-stringers, allowing George Sandvin to find Major Martin  for a five-yard touchdown with 1:41 left in the game. The touchdown was a career first for both Sandvin and Martin. The Gusties outgained the Beavers 553-316 with 263 yards coming on the ground. Peal had 10 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown while Konde added 54 yards on three carries and a score. Rennie finished the night 19-of-27 for 267 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. WHEN STOUT AND GUSTAVUS LAST MET: In the second quarter, UW-Stout led Gustavus Adolphus, 17-14, but the Gusties found a rhythm and blasted 27 unanswered points. The 27 unanswered points were enough as Gustavus beat the Blue Devils with a score of 41-31. For Stout, Sean Borgerding finished the game 22-46 with 278 yards passing to go along with two touchdowns. Borgerding also had 40 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Gusties quarterback, Michael Veldman finished the game with 249 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air. Veldman also ran for 44 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Arguedas, who is now playing on the defensive side of the ball, rushed the ball 18 yards for Stout's first score in the first quarter.

THE SERIES: Gustavus leads the series, 5-2, with the teams splitting their last two meetings. Stout won 24-23 in overtime during the 2018 season in St. Peter, but the Gusties won the 2019 meeting in Menomonie, 41-31.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: The Blue Devils struggled a little bit the first game, only recording 250 yards in their season opener, much less than the 431 that the offense was averaging last year. Despite this, the Blue Devils look to bring back the pass-first offense that was one of the best in the WIAC last season. In the season opener, Stout ran 44 pass plays (for a total of 185 yards) and only 28 running plays (for a total of 64 yards). On the defensive end of the ball, Stout allowed 364 yards against the balanced Knights. (182 yards passing, 182 yards rushing). Out of the 11 drives that the Stout defense faced, three were Wartburg TDs, two resulted in field goals, and the other six were forced punts or a turnover on downs.

THE PASSING GAME: Lots of familiar faces had their number called in the season opener for Stout. Quarterback Sean Borgerding went 23 for 44, throwing for 186 yards, against Wartburg. Arthur Cox, Parker Fossum, and Levy Hamer led the receiving corps in Stout's pass first offense. Cox pulled down eight passes for 81 yards, Fossum five receptions for 28 yards, and Hamer four passes for 38 yards.

THE RUNNING GAME: Matt Pomietlo got the majority of Stout's carries out of the backfield. Pomietlo saw 10 carries for 36 yards against the Wartburg Knights. Arthur Cox had three carries for 15 yards, and Jacob Kopacz had four carries for 15 yards.

TOTAL OFFENSE: In the first game in the 2022 season, Stout recorded 250 total yards, throwing for 186 yards and rushing for 64 yards.

DEFENSE: Cannon Griner led the team in tackles in the season opener against Wartburg. Griner, who led the WIAC in tackles last season, recorded nine tackles in the first game. Other leaders on the team include Mack Klafter with eight tackles and Carson Strong with six tackles, one for a three loss. Nick Arguedas, who is returning on the defensive side of the ball for the Blue Devils, recorded four tackles, with two for a loss.

CLIMBING THE LADDER: With one game down in their last season, quarterback Sean Borgerding and wide receiver Levy Hamer inch closer to the top of the Stout all-time list.

Borgerding, a three-time WIAC honorable mention selection, has started for the last three seasons and has completed 564 of 1003 passes for 7599 yards, with 67 touchdowns against only 31 interceptions. Borgerding's total passing yards is currently for third on the all-time list, behind only Tim Peterson (8881 yds/1986-89) and Matt Bunyan (8562 yds/1995-98). His 67 touchdowns trail only Bunyan's 85. Last season, Borgerding completed 205 of 327 passes for 2872 with 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Only Bunyan (3230 yds, 1998/3221 yds, 1997) and Peterson 2956, 1989) have thrown more yards in a single season and only Bunyan (38 TDs, 1998/33 TDs, 1997) has thrown more touchdowns in a single season.

Hamer, a second team all-region pick in 2021, has been a recipient of many of Borgerding's passes. Hamer is currently second on the Blue Devils' all-time receiving list, pulling in 182 passes for 2851 yards and 26 touchdowns. Hamer trails only Scott Frederickson (1986-89) in receptions and yards. Frederickson has 233 receptions for 3390 yards. Hamer already leads Stout with 26 total receiving touchdowns. Hamer is currently ninth on the all-time scoring list with 160 points. Running back Luke Bundgaard (2000-03) is the all-time scoring leader with 240 points. Hamer led the WIAC in receiving yards per game last year, averaging 96.2 yards over 10 games. Hamer was fourth in the WIAC in scoring with 74 points.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished sixth in the competitive WIAC in 2021 and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish sixth in 2022. UW-Whitewater is picked to finish first, UW-La crosse second, UW-River Falls third, UW-Oshkosh fourth, UW-Platteville fifth, UW-Stout sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh and UW-Stevens Point eighth.

WHO'S WHO: GUSTAVUS: The Gusties are coming off its best season in over two decades, after finishing the 2021 year at -2 overall and 6-2 in the MIAC for third place. After all-time leading passer Michael Veldman graduated, Daniel Rennie got the start for the Gusties this season. Rennie only saw action in one blowout game last season, but threw for 267 yards on 19 completions with four touchdowns and two interceptions against Buena Vista. Rennie also recorded a rushing touchdown. Three of those touchdown passes were to Jake Breitbach, who caught five passes for 81 yards. In the backfield, David Peal and Rohee Konde make up a majority of the yards on the ground. Against the Beavers, Peal ran for 79 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown while Konde ran for 54 yards on three carries and recorded a 37-yard touchdown run. On the defensive end, key standouts in the Gusties first game were Zach Jakes, Trajan Kaeppe, and Isaiah Chambers. Jakes had an impressive stat line in the first half, recording a blocked kick, interception, and sack. Kaeppe led the team with four tackles in the season opener, while Chambers picked off the opposing QB on their opening drive of the second half. As a team, the Gusties recorded 553 yards of total offense, averaging 7.7 yards per play. The Gusties only allowed their opponent 236 yards and 13 first downs. The Gusties had 30 first downs in their season opener.

MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season.

TAILGATING: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.

DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: UW-Stout's Don and Nona Williams Stadium got a facelift in 2018 with the installation of an updated surface. FieldTurf installed the FieldTurf Revolution 360. FieldTurf promotes this surface as having "optimal durability, resilience, and feel." A padding/drainage mat will be added, as well as flushing the current drainage system to make sure the field sheds water as designed. The field's layout will be similar to the previous markings and will again include markings for high school hash marks. The S logo at midfield has been replaced by the new Blaze head logo. The stadium, which was opened during the 2001 season, last had the stadium turf replaced during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembled natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. At the time, the Wisconsin Badgers were the only Wisconsin college team that played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, every WIAC school has an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils are scheduled to host Crown College, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. in the home opener at Don and Nona Williams Stadium. This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
