Borgerding, Hamer, Priebe, Griner named 2022 Blue Devil football team captains

2022 UW-Stout Football Schedule

MENOMONIE (May 22, 2022) - Sean Borgerding, Levy Hamer, Mason Priebe and Cannon Griner were selected as 2022 team captains of the UW-Stout football team recently.

Borgerding, a senior quarterback from Spring Valley, and Hamer, a senior wide receiver from Chicago, Ill,, will be entering their third year as team captains. Priebe, a junior defensive back from Menasha, will be a team captain for the second consecutive year. Griner, a defensive back from Mesa, Ariz., is a first year team captain.

Borgerding, a three-time All-WIAC honorable selection, and Hamer, a 2021 All-Region and All-WIAC first team selection and 2019 All-WIAC second team selection, have been climbing the UW-Stout career lists together.

With one more year to go, quarterback Borgerding and wide receiver Hamer each are within striking distance of taking the top spot in their respective career categories. Hamer sits only 577 receiving yards behind Scott Frederickson (1986-89). Frederickson is Stout's all time leading receiver with 3390 yards. Hamer also has an opportunity to climb on Stout's all-time scorers, as he sits in ninth place in scoring. Borgerding is on track to pass Matt Bunyan (1995-98) and Tim Peterson (1986-89) for all time passing yards at Stout. Borgerding has 7404 passing yards and will need 1477 yards to pass Bunyan and Peterson. Borgerding sits in second of the all-time touchdowns thrown, with only Bunyan ahead of him with 85 touchdowns thrown. Borgerding will need 18 more touchdowns to pass Bunyan, and after his WIAC-best 29 touchdowns last season, it is more than doable for him. Borgerding passed for 2881 yards in 2021 and Hamer caught 60 catches for 962 yards and 12 TDs.

Priebe and Griner have played together in the defensive backfield since joining the Blue Devils in 2019. Griner last season led the team in total tackles with 86, 49 solo. Griner led the team interceptions with four and broke-up a team-high seven passes. Priebe finished the season with 36 total tackles, 18 solo, and was right behind Griner with three interceptions and four pass break-ups.

The Blue Devils open the season with two games on the road, playing at Wartburg College, Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m., then at Gustavus Adolphus College, Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils will open a three-game homestand when they host Crown College, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m., followed by the annual War On '94 battle with UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m., to open the conference season, then will host UW-La Crosse Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. for Homecoming and the Hall of Fame Game.
