Blue Devil softball concludes season with games at Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT (April 29, 2022) - UW-Stout's softball season came to an end in Stevens Point as the Blue Devils lost a pair of conference games to the Pointers, 7-0, 8-0 (6 inn) Friday at  McCarty Memorial Field.

The Pointers (18-16, 3-9 WIAC) used a big inning in each game to down the Blue Devils (12-24, 2-14 WIAC).

The line score of game one contained all zeroes, with the exception of the bottom of the fourth where Stevens Point took advantage of two Stout errors at the beginning of the inning to go on and score all seven runs for the game. 

Stout got three hits in the game, one each by Ashley Jacobson, Shannon Jones nd Addison Murry, and the Pointers finished with nine hits, six in the fourth inning. 

In game two, the Pointers scored two runs in the second inning, then finished off the game with six runs in the sixth inning to get to the 8-run rule. 

Stout recorded two hits, one each by Korin Hall and Aliyah Smetana. Smetana recorded a stolen base. No Blue Devils drew a walk or was hit by a pitch. 

The games marked the end of the collegiate careers of Addison Murry, Korin Hall, Madee Kleinschmidt and Shannon Jones.

This season, the Blue Devils won twice as many games as last year under first year coach Chris Iliopoulos and also won their first conference games since the 2019 season.

Hall led the team in batting average with a .314 average (27-86). Hall was the conference's leader in stolen bases going into today's games, nabbing 20. Lexy Kupczak was the conference leader in home runs, sending seven over the fence. Kupczak also led the team in RBI with 20. Kupczak recorded a slugging percentage of .682. 

As a team, the Blue Devils recorded more hits than last year (208 in 2022, 201 in 2021), more runs (122-89), the same number of doubles (34), more home runs (13-5), and more stolen bases (51-27), The pitching staff had a lower ERA (5.23-5.65), the opponent's batting average was lower (.319-.351), the number of extra base hits allowed was down (70-81) and the number of strikeouts by Stout pitchers was up (141-90). Stout played 36 games in 2022, 32 in 2021.
