Comeback falls just short as Blue Devils close out home season

UW-La Crosse 9, UW-Stout 0 (5 inn) | UW-La Crosse 4, UW-Stout 2

MENOMONIE (April 26, 2022) - After dropping a five inning, first game, UW-Stout came out strong in the second game of their final home dates of the season, but could not come away with a win and UW-La Crosse defeated Stout, 9-0 in five innings and 4-2.

In the second game, the Eagles (19-8, 7-1 WIAC) scored a single run in the second inning, but Stout (12-20, 2-8 WIAC) grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the inning - and did it with two outs.

Designated player Kate Funk hit a two-out double to left center, then came home on Alexa Anderson's single. Anderson took second on the throw to the plate. Kelly Beck walked and the Eagles changed pitchers. Emma Muehlenbeck greeted the new pitcher with an RBI single to give Stout the lead.

The Eagles came back for a run in the third inning to tie the game, then added two more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run home run.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Stout pitcher Anna Blanford got out of the jam with a flyout and a strikeout. Stout threatened in the bottom of the seventh, again with two outs. Pinch hitter Grace Vowell smacked a single to right center. Ashley Jacobson walked, but a fly out ended the game. Muehlenbeck finished the game with two hits.

In the first game, the Eagles got a run in the third inning, then scored eight runs in the fourth inning after two Stout errors.

Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, April 27 with a 2 p.m. start, then will close out the regular season at UW-Stevens Point, Sunday, May 1.
