FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 17, 2022)- The UW-Stout Blue Devils baseball team continued their winning ways on Thursday. Picking up two wins over Lasell University, establishing their first win streak of the season.
The Blue Devils started the morning by beating the Lasers 13-6, collecting a season high 18 hits and 13 runs. The Blue Devils were lead by
Charlie Szykowny,
Colin Hageman and
Jacoby Endreas who all collected three hits. Meanwhile,
Reese Vold and
Joel Thimsen collected two hits of their own.
The Blue Devils got out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. The Lasers would answer immediately, cutting the lead to 2-0. The Blue Devils would add to their lead in the fifth inning on back to back doubles by Vold and Hageman, followed by a Thimsen sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 5-2.
After the Lasers cut the lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning, Szykowny would tack on two runs with a two run blast to right field for his third home run on the young season. The Blue Devils would add six more runs in the seventh inning to increase the lead to 13-3. Szykowny added another RBI on the morning on a bases loaded single, followed by a two-RBI single by Thimsen.
Drew Ries would pick up an RBI on the next at on a single. Endreas would cap off a very impressive morning by the offense with an RBI single of his own, to bring the score to 13-3.
The Lasers would add three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before
Marty Kiernan would shut the door for the win.
Ethan Kjellberg (1-1) was excellent on the mound for the Blue Devils, going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and picking up the win.
Following the morning game, the Blue Devils would display a dominate performance, winning 11-0 for their first shutout of the season. The Blue Devils were lead by Szykowny, Schirkpe and
Cooper Beving.
Making his first start in two years, Beving (1-0) was spectacular on the mound. The junior pitcher hurled four innings allowing zero runs on one hit and one walk.
Schirpke got the Blue Devils on the board in the second inning when he scored on a Laser error. After a Hageman walk that loaded the bases, Szykowny hit a blast over the right field fence for his fourth home run of the season and the Blue Devils second grand slam in as many days.
In the third inning, Schirpke singled home Endreas, followed by Vold flyout, scoring Schirpke to increase the lead to 7-0 after three innings. In the fourth inning, Thimsen doubled, scoring Szykowny on the play, to extend his RBI streak to seven games. The Blue Devils would add two more runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth, securing an 11-0 win.
In the second game of the day, Szykowny was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored and Schirpke finished 4-for-4 with three runs.
Tristan Stark,
Tim Kohls and
Trevor Miller were all perfect out of the bullpen allowing zero runs.
The Blue Devils are back in action Friday morning in a rematch versus Eastern Connecticut State University at 9 a.m. EST.
