UW-Stout 58, UW-Oshkosh 56
MENOMONIE (February 5, 2022) - UW-Stout recorded their first win at Johnson Fieldhouse over UW-Oshkosh since 2011, and it was another game that went down to the wire. These games have become common for the Blue Devil women and this time it was
Lauren Arenz recording a huge block which helped
Raegan Sorensen find
Lizzy Olsem on the fast break. Olsem connected on a layup which put Stout ahead with eight seconds left. Stout went on to a 58-56 win Saturday.
Stout (12-8, 7-3 WIAC) was able to lead for most of the game, but their lead was always a slim margin. Stout came out of the first quarter only up by one (14-13). The second quarter was even closer, with Oshkosh (14-5, 4-4 WIAC) taking a small three point lead towards the end of the half. The Blue Devils were able to take the lead before the buzzer, entering the break up 28-27.
Oshkosh was able to stay on the heels of the Blue Devils, never allowing them to lead by more than seven points. But the game came down to the final minute, when Oshkosh's Jenna Jorgensen connected on a lay-up to tie the game 56-56. The Blue Devils called a time out to set up a play, but Jorgensen found the ball and started heading towards the hoop. When she got there, she was met by
Lauren Arenz, who made a great play on the ball. Arenz blocked the ball right into the hands of Sorensen. Sorensen drove nearly the length of the court and found
Lizzy Olsem on the fast break, and Olsem finished off the play to put the Blue Devils up 58-56. Oshkosh had a chance to take the lead, but failed to connect on an off-balance 3-pointer.
Jorgensen led the Titans in scoring with 15 while Abby Kaiser recorded 11.
For the Blue Devils,
Amanda Giesen had another big game, recording 18 points and nine rebounds.
Anna Mutch finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Sam Schaeffer and Sorensen finished with nine.
As a team, the Blue Devils dominated the boards, pulling down 43 rebounds to Oshkosh's 27. Neither team shot well from deep, with Oshkosh shooting 14-percent (2 for 22) and Stout 10-percent (1 for 10). Overall, Stout shot 43-percent from the floor (24 for 56) and Oshkosh 41-percent (24 for 59).
Stout stays home this Wednesday, Feb. 9 when they host UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
