Blue Devils unable to convert on final play, fall in season finale to River Falls

RIVER FALLS (November 12, 2022) - The Blue Devils (5-5, 3-4 WIAC) scored a touchdown with 11 seconds left, but were unable to convert on the two-point conversion, falling to No. 24 UW-River Falls (6-4, 4-3 WIAC) in a nail-biter. Stout wrapped up their 2022 season with a 5-5 and 3-4 record after their 35-34 loss to River Falls.

Stout got the scoring started up on their first offense drive after forcing a Falcon's punt. Luke Cool made a 37-yard field goal to put Stout up 3-0. After forcing two more River Fall's punts, the Stout offense was stopped after Micheal Brown intercepted a Borgerding pass.

The River Falls offense capitalized on the turnover with a 24 yard touchdown pass from freshman QB Tyler Schweigert to Mason Van Zeeland. Stout answered back a couple drives later, capping a seven-play drive with 47-yard touchdown reception by Arthur Cox from Sean Borgerding. With that touchdown pass, Borgerding tied the Stout all-time passing touchdown record.

The next drive, Nick Arguedas picked off River Falls QB, Kaleb Blaha. Stout was unable to capitalize and were forced to punt on the following drive. After receiving the punt, the Falcons only needed one play to find the end zone. Kaleb Blaha found Micheal Krueger for a 42-yard touchdown pass. This ended out the first half, with Stout behind 14-10.

River Falls got the scoring started in the second half, with Kaleb Blaha finding Van Zeeland on a 6-yard touchdown pass, going up 21-10.

Stout closed the gap, with back-to-back scoring drives, tying the the game to 21-21. The first, Luke Cool connected on a 37-yard field goal. The second, Sean Borgerding broke Stout's all-time career passing TD record, with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Levy Hamer. Sean Borgerding then rushed into the end zone for the two-point conversion, tying the game at 21 a piece.

The next score was from River Falls QB Kaleb Blaha, rushing into the endzone form one-yard out after a 57-yard drive in three plays. Stout answered back with a Levy Hamer 39-yard touchdown pass from Sean Borgerding, keeping the game tied at 28-28.

River Falls took the lead with 1:30 left after another Kaleb Blaha rush from one-yard out. Stout then took the ball 79-yards in 6 plays in the final minute. The River Falls defense made a goal line stand, giving Stout a 4th and goal from the one-yard line.

Playing in his last game as Blue Devil, QB Sean Borgerding found Arthur Cox on the 4th and goal, closing the score to 35-34 with 11 seconds left. Stout was unable to connect on the two-point conversion and a failed onside kick resulted in the 35-34 River Falls win.

Borgerding finished the game with a near career-high 354 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. Arthur Cox led the receiving corps with 162 yards and three touchdowns. Levy Hamer also added in 146 of his own yards with one receiving touchdown. River Falls QB Kaleb Blaha finished with 236 yards passing, 87 rushing, and had two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns.

On the defensive end, Canon Griner recorded 8.0 tackls and Gervase Thompson 7.0. Thompson also had 2 tackles for a loss. Nick Arguedas had the Blue Devils interception. River Falls DB, Aaron Borgerding, brother of Sean Borgerding, record 10 tackles for the Falcons.

With this game, the Blue Devils wrap up their 2022 season at 5-5 and 3-4 in the WIAC.
