EAU CLAIRE (October 16, 2022) - UW-Stout and UW-Oshkosh competed in a marathon, five-hour, 34-minute, match and the Blue Devils'
Madeline Binczak and the Titans' Hannah Stitt bore the brunt of the match, competing in a three hour match that determined the team winner at the Menard YMCA Tennis Center Sunday in Eau Claire.
With the team match tied at 4-4 after Stout came back to tie the match after dropping two of three doubles matches, Binczak eked out a first set win, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker. Stitt came back to dominate the second set, 6-1. Binczak powered her way back to tie the third set at 6-6 and this time Stitt would win the tie-breaker, giving the Titans a 5-4 team win in the regular season finale.
"Maddy battled from start to finish," said Stout coach
Bryce Supri. "She was down 5-2Â in the first set before coming back to win the first set in a tiebreak."
The match, which had moved from Menomonie to the Eau Claire YMCA indoor facility due to less than ideal outdoor conditions, did not start off well for the Blue Devils with the Titans taking No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Stout's
Kylie Rennie and
Ashlyn Dellemann captured the No. 3 doubles win over Stitt and Courtney Carpenter, 8-5.Â
Lauren Couves and
Ellie Becker lost 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Krystin Hanson and
Ella Lamppa lost an 8-2 match at No. 2 doubles.
The Blue Devils fell further behind in singles as Hanson lost at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Dellemann lost 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.Â
Stout captured the next three matches that come off the courts to tie the match at 4 apiece.
Becker picked up Stout's first singles win, grabbing a 6-3, 6-0, win at No. 2 singles over Alexandra Schmoldt. "This was the best I have ever seen Ellie play in singles," Supri said. Â She has worked hard to develop her forehand in to a weapon and it played off for her today."
Couves won at No. 1 singles over Alysa Pattee in a three set match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Lexie Stein went three sets to win at No. 6 singles, winning the first set, 6-4, but lost the second set, 6-1. Stein took control of Alessandra Rivera in the third set, winning 6-2, to tie the match and set the stage for the final match of Binczak and Stitt.Â
"Lexie has now won back to back three set matches," Supri said "She does a great job of staying in control throughout her match and always plays with confidence."
"After losing two of the three doubles (matches), everyone regrouped to make it a very competitive match that came down to the wire," Supri said. "
"It has been great to see the continued improvement of the players throughout the season," Supri said. "Overall I am very happy to see our improvement from just last week to this week, and I feel like we have some momentum going in to the conference tournament next weekend."
The Blue Devils will participate in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Tennis Championship, Saturday, Oct. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Nielsen Indoor Tennis Complex in Madison.
