PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – UW-Stout (1-8-2, 0-1-0) dropped the WIAC conference opener on the road at UW-Platteville (8-2-1, 1-0-0) 4-3 Saturday afternoon.
Stout started fast on the attack, The Blue Devils took the opening kick and in three passes found themselves in the pioneers box,but their shot from the left side was wide of the target. UWP responded moving the ball right back down the field and had a chance but the ball was cleared for a throw in. The UWP throw landed in the box and on the bounce UWP tucked the ball inside the left post to score just a minute and 19 seconds into the match.
Stout kept pressuring earing two corner kicks in the first seven minutes, but were unable to get any quality looks on net. Shield made a diving save on a tricky ball in the 11th minute to keep the deficit at one.
Shield saw 17 shots, eight of which were on target and she made four saves.
Platteville doubled their lead scored on a corner kick in the 22nd minute on a hard shot that found the top corner.
Less than three minutes later, the Blue Devils answered when
Marissa Steele sniped a shot from the right corner of the 18-yard box that knicked off the bottom of the bar and across the line.
Steele's goal snapped a six game scoreless streak for the Blue Devils.
The momentum was short lived as the Pioneers scored again off of a corner to regain the two goal advantage in the 27th minute.
Kennedy Beld pulled the Blue Devils within one in the 35th minute with a long shot that found the back of the net from nearly 40 yards away.
The Blue Devils made one last rush before half and
Ella Kemp found an opening and pushed the ball up the field taking a shot from just outside the box looping over the goaltender to tie the game at 3 with just 17 seconds left in the half.
Platteville retook the lead early in the second half, breaking the 3-3 tie in the 55th minute. Stout attempted four more shots in the half but were unable to get any more past the Pioneer goaltender.
Stout will head to Winona, Minn. to face Saint Mary's University on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.
