DUBUQUE, Iowa (September 4, 2021) - The UW-Stout tennis team did not drop a set as they won two matches by identical 9-0 scores in the season openers at the Universityof Dubuque, Saturday.
The Blue Devils (2-0) defeated host Dubuque 9-0 in the morning match, then dispatched Monmouth College by the same score in an early afternoon match.Â
Playing in her home state,
Lauren Couves (Jr, Ames, Iowa) took a 6-2, 6-0, win over Dubuque's Alyssa Stevenson at No. 1 singles, then blanked Monmouth's Emily McLaughlin, 6-0. 6-0.
Annie Sandry (Sr, Clara City, Minn) played at No. 2 singles against Dubuque, winning 6-3, 6-1, over Lauren Colon. Sandry sat out the Monmouth match, allowing all of the Stout players to move up one spot against the Scots.
Freshman
Ellie Becker (St. James, Minn) opened up with a 7-5, 6-4, win over Dubuque's Jordyn Cory, then won in straight sets over Monmouth's Isabel Hammond at No. 2.
Senior
Mariah Kent (Eau Claire) captured a 6-1, 6-1, win over Dubuque's Reese Gottman at No. 4, then went 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 over Monmouth's Emily Henson.
Freshman
Anna Kent (Eau Claire) won 6-0, 6-0, over Dubuque's Regina Kadima at No. 5 and won 6-2, 6-0, over the Scott's Julia Mheidze at No. 4.
Kyrstin Hanson (Jr, Rice Lake) captured No. 6 singles over Dubuque's Liliana Leguizamo, then at No. 5 over Monmouth, did not allow a set against Ditza Montesinos.
Freshman
Emma Benjamin (Zimmerman, Minn) defeated Monmouth's Jennifer Shimmin, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
Doubles featured different pairing in all three flights for the Blue Devils. Against Dubuque, Couves and
Mariah Kent combined for an 8-3 win at No. 1, Sandry and Becker took No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 win, and
Macy Hanson (Fr, Elk River, Minn) and Benjamin shut out their Dubuque opponent at No. 3, 8-0.
Against Monmouth, Couves and Sandry won at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Sisters Mariah and
Anna Kent won at No. 2, 8-0, and Hanson and
Kylie Rennie (Jr, Wausau) took No. 3 with an 8-0 win.
The Blue Devils return to action when they open conference play by hosting UW-La Crosse, Sunday, Sept. 12 at noon.
