Blue Devil Scholar-Athletes honored for academic achievement

MENOMONIE (April 12, 2021) - Thirty-two UW-Stout senior scholar-athletes were honored Monday in an awards ceremony that also recognized 160 underclass scholar-athletes in Johnson Fieldhouse of the Sports and Fitness Center.

Those scholar-athletes honored were: Michala Belter (Elk Grove, Ill), Caylee Boone (Elk Mound), Brady Booth (Boyd), Melea Bruns (Elk River, Minn), Evan Butcher (Anchorage, Alaska), Lucas Carroll (East Bethel, Minn), Jessica Christiansen (Somonauk, Ill), Spencer Cowley (Woodbury, Minn), Dan Deis (Plymouth, Minn), Lexi Fernandez (St. Charles, Minn), Gabe Hall (Cannon Falls, Minn), Jack Hoaby (Maple Lake, Minn), Meghan Kelly (Lockport, Ill), Tori Lammar, (Stetsonville), Mariah Lang (Kenyon, Minn), Shelby Larson (Maple Lake, Minn), Cody Lohrenz (Hortonville), Lauren Mickley (Westerville,Ohio), Maddie Mullenbach (Austin, Minn), Renee Murphy (Tinley Park, Ill), Liz Oswald (Watertown), James Palmer (Boyceville), Molly Perkins (Brookfield), Amber Ripley (Farmington, Minn), Bailey Roux (Rice Lake), Olivia Satterlee (Greendale), Kami Sawtelle (Luverne, Minn), Raelin Sorensen (Balsam Lake), J.Dan Sturgeon (West Lafayette, Ind), Dawson Tusow (Hawley), Grace Wallstead (Kiel), and Noah Zastrow (Spencer).  

The UW-Stout Scholar Athlete Award is given to student-athletes with a cumulative 3.50 grade point average in the semester preceding their final season of eligibility.

This is the 10th year of the UW-Stout Scholar-Athlete program, which was instituted by UW-Stout Athletic Faculty Representatives Jo Hopp and Brian Finder in 2012. The program has grown from 18 senior scholar-athletes and 76 underclassmen during the first year of the program to this year's 32 senior scholar-athletes and 160 underclassmen.

Participating in the ceremony were Chancellor Katherine Frank; Glendali Rodriguez, interim provost; and Duey Naatz, director of athletics.

During the 2019-20 academic year,  340 of 453 student-athletes complied a 3.0 or more grade point average, with 201 student-athletes posting over a 3.50 and 25 carried a 4.0 grade point average. The Blue Devil student-athletes compiled a 3.37 cumulative grade point average and for the 10th consecutive year had a cumulative grade point average higher than the general student body (3.22). 

The medallion presented to each of the senior Scholar-Athletes was designed by former Blue Devil student-athletes Kate Mikutowski and Zak Snell. In addition, a large action poster of each senior Scholar-Athlete will be displayed in the Sports and Fitness Center during the upcoming year.

The Scholar Athlete Award program is supported by the offices of the Chancellor and Academic and Student Affairs.
