DECORAH, Iowa (March 24, 2021) - After getting held to one hit in the opener, UW-Stout pounded out nine hits in the second half of a doubleheader at Luther College, but the Blue Devils still dropped both ends, 13-0, 9-5, Wednesday.
While Luther College (11-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead by scoring two runs in the first and three runs in the second inning of the nightcap, Stout (3-7) made it a game with a four-run fourth inning.
Kelly Beck and
Shannon Jones hit back-to-back singles to open the fourth.
Meghan Kelly and Katie Funk hit back-to-back singles to center field, with Kelly driving in Beck and Funk plating Jones.
Michala Belter slammed a two-run double to left field pull Stout to within 5-4.
The Blue Devils put the Norse down in order in the fourth, but then stranded a runner in the fifth. Luther led off the fifth with a home run by Belle Berg, opening the door for a four-run inning.
Stout got one of the runs back in the sixth, on a groundout by pinch hitter
Alyssa Albrecht.
Peterson and Beck each had two hits, while Belter had the two-run double. Summer Kunstmann took the loss, going 4.1 innings.
Luther College ended the first game in five innings, opening their half of the first inning with a seven-run attack and just kept the pressure on by scoring two runs in each the second, third and fourth innings. Stout's only hit of the game came from lead-off hitter
Korin Hall, who sliced a single to left field to start the game.
Melea Brun took the loss in the opener, giving up eight hits and nine runs, but only two runs were earned. Bruns went two innings and
Jordan Caby came on for the final two innings, the first collegiate appearance for the lefty.
Stout returns to action this weekend when they travel to Mankato, Minn., to take on Bethany Lutheran College, Saturday, March 27, then travel to Crown College, Sunday, March 28.
