THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (0-0, 0-0Â WIAC) will open the truncated 2020-21 season by hosting UW-River Falls (0-0, 0-0 WIAC), Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.. The Falcons took both games last season, winning at UW-River Falls, 92-79, at River Falls, and carried a 96-77 win out of Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout will be at UW-RIver Falls, Friday, Feb. 5.Â
2020-21 SEASON: The COVID-19 pandemic forced all sports to rethink their schedule and WIAC basketball will have eight regular season games, which will only be against conference opponents, plus a conference tournament. The conference has been divided into two divisions, and East and West. The teams in each division will meet twice during the shortened regular season, all in the same week with games on Wednesdays and Fridays. Stout is in the West Division along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls and UW-La Crosse. There will two games against a crossover opponent, and Stout will play UW-Whitewater twice. The conference tournament is scheduled to be held the first week of March, with the first round Monday, March 1, the second round Wednesday, March 3 and the championship game Friday, March 5. All tournament games will be played at the high seed. No fans will be allowed during the 2020-21 season.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils were led in 2019-20 by Jon Ciriacks who averaged 16.0 points, a mark that ranked fifth in the WIAC. Ciriack averaged 6.1 rebounds, seventh in the league and stepped outside to pop in a team-best 54 3-point shots, averaging 2.16 3-pointers, sixth in the WIAC. Ciriacks came close to doubling his 3-point output from the previous season when he hit 31 total 3-point attempts. Ciriacks shot .833 from the free throw line, hitting 75-of-90 charity attempts, tying for second in the WIAC. Ciriacks  scored in double figures in 20 of the team's 25 contests and seven times has scored 20 or more points. Ciriacks scored a career-high 35 points during the 2019-20 season against Bethany Lutheran. Ciriacks scored a career-best 399 total points (135-319), giving him 738 points, putting him 50th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list.Â
- Luke Geiger has been part of the inside-outside game for the Blue Devils and averaged 13.4 points, 12th in the WIAC. The lanky guard averaged 4.6 rebounds and led the team in assists with 38. Geiger scored a career-best 31 points against Concordia-Moorhead early in the season, 30 points in a win over Northland College and 27 points against Lakeland University. Geiger, who went from scoring 11 total points as a freshman to 332 points as a sophomore, finished with 335 points, tallying 678 career points, good for 60th on the all-time list.Â
- TYreese Alexander, who transferred to Stout from Oakland Community College, finished the 2019-20 season averaging 9.6 points. Alexander found his spot in the second half of the season, which coincided with the conference season, when he scored in double digits in 10 of 14 conference games. Alexander shot a smooth .574 (99-181) from the floor, third in the WIAC. Alexander was second on the team in rebounds at 5.6 per game, ranking 13th in the WIAC, and led the team in blocked shots with 15, notching a Stout-best four blocked shots against UW-Stevens Point, Feb. 19. Alexander scored a career-best 21 points against UW-River Falls, Jan. 15, and scored 20 against UW-Oshkosh, Feb. 15.
- Stout returns four of their five starters and return six of their seven top scorers.Â
- Josh Mericle started 20 games last season, including all 14 conference games. Mericle averaged 5.9 points per contest and scored a career-high 19 points, Edgewood College, Dec. 29, 2019, topping a previous best 15 point performance vs. Bethany Lutheran. Mericle was second on the team in assists, dishing off 37.Â
- Kyle Jackson saw action in 20 games, starting two, and averaged 6.1 points. Marcus Hill was one of only three players (with Ciriacks and Geiger) who saw action in all 25 games. Hill came off the bench to average 16.4 minutes per contest, scoring 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds. Jake Horton saw action in 23 games and started seven games. Horton averaged just over 14 minutes and was third on the team in assists with 33.
- Seeing action in more than 10 games last season are: Kaden Koski, Preston Briggs, Carson Moe, Zach Miller and Brady Booth.Â
- When Ciriacks scored a career-best 35 points against Bethany Lutheran. The 35 points is the most since Jerrod Buchholz scored 34 points Jan. 5, 2011 against UW-River Falls. The following is a list of players who have scored 35 or more points in a single game since 1998-99. - Miles Webb scored 37 points Jan. 16, 2008 against UW-Stevens Point. - As a team, the Blue Devils finished fourth in the league in scoring with 74.0 points, while allowing 82.9 points.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- The Blue Devils closed out the 2019-20 season with a win over UW-Whitewater.Â

SCOUTING UW-RIVER FALLS
- The Falcons' leading returning scorer is senior guard Jack Stensgard, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors. Stensgard averaged 11.5 points per contest. Junior guard Noah Hanson returns as the Falcons' leading rebounder, pulling down 4.5 rebounds per contest. THE FALCONS LAST YEAR
- UW-River Falls finished last season at 12-14 overall, 5-9 in the WIAC. The Falcons lost 80-58 in the first round of the WIAC tournament.Â
- River Falls fell to UW-La Crosse, 80-58, in the first round of the WIAC Championship tournament to close out the season. The Falcons made 8-25 (32 percent) field goals in the first half, including 3-8 from behind the arc.  Alex Ohde led the Falcons in the first half with 11 points, shooting 3-3 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line. The Falcons scored 13 points off the bench in the first half, 23 total for the game. UWRF went into halftime trailing 27-36. The Falcons shot 32.3 percent from the field in the second half (10-31), hitting 4-10 from behind the arc (40 percent). Julian Jackson led the Falcons in the second half, scoring 12 on shooting 5-10 from the field. River Falls scored 20 points in the paint on the night, 12 coming in the second half. UWRF scored 10 2nd chance points off of 12 offensive rebounds. The Falcons scored seven points overall off 13 Eagle turnovers. Ohde and Jackson were the team's high scorers, finishing with 14 points each. Jackson also recorded eight rebounds. Overall the Falcons went 18-56 from the floor (32.1 percent), 7-18 from three-point (38.9 percent), and 15-19 from the free throw line (78.9 percent).  Wyatt Cook led the Eagles and all players with 21 points. | Game Story and Statistics
LAST YEAR WHEN UW-RIVER FALLSÂ AND STOUT MET
- UW-Stout shot better than 50 percent from the floor and transfer TYreese Alexander scored a season-high, but the Blue Devils were toppled by UW-River Falls, 92-79, Jan. 15, 2020, at Page Arena. Alexander scored a Stout-high 21 point, evenly distributing his point total in each half, scoring 10 points in the first half and 11 in the second. As a team, the Blue Devils (5-10, 1-3 WIAC) shot 50.8 percent, hitting 30 of 59 shots from the floor, including seven 3-pointers.  The Falcons (9-6, 2-2 WIAC) held a 43-34 halftime lead and shot 55.9 percent from the floor for the game, hitting 33 of 59 shots, including six 3-pointers.  The teams played relatively even in the second half, but the Falcons kept Stout at arms length by shooting 61.5 percent in the second half. The Blue Devils shot 53.3 percent in the second half, but only got as close as eight points. Alexander led Stout by hitting the 20-point mark for the first time in his Stout career, finishing with 21 points, dropping in 9 of 13 shots. He also made all three free throws. Jon Ciriacks had his string of 20-point game stopped, but he still scored 15 points. Luke Geiger finished with 14 points. The Falcons' Julian Jackson led all scorers with 27 points. - UW-Stout played a solid first half, taking a nine-point, 50-41, lead over UW-River Falls into the locker room at intermission. But the Blue Devils saw that lead disappear over the first five minutes of the second half as River Falls outscored Stout 23-2 and went on to suffer a 96-77 loss Feb. 5, 2020, at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout scored the first basket of the second half, but it was all River alls for the next five minutes until Jon Ciriacks stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer at 15:11. Julian Jackson scored eight points in the run, while Jake Reeck scored five points, Austin Werdin four points and Bryce Phillips and Jack Stensgard each connected with a 3-pointer. The Falcons (11-9, 4-5 WIAC) hit three 3-pointers in the run that lasted four minutes that erased Stout's 50-41 halftime lead. The Blue Devils (5-15, 1-8 WIAC) enjoyed success in the first half, shooting 51.4 percent (19-37) before the break. Marcus Hll led Stout with 11 first half points and Ciriacks had 10. Stout forced a couple of shot clock violations in the first half and outscored the Falcons 22-14 in the paint. The second proved to be a different animal for the Blue Devils, who scored 27 points and shot 29.4 percent (10-34). For the game, Stout shot 40. percent (29-71). The Falcons turned their fortunes around after the halftime talk. River alls shot 43.8 percent (14-32) in the first half and 63.3 percent (19-30) in the second half to finish at 53.2 percent (33-62). BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
- Jim Lake (12-38) is in his third season in 2020-21 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title. (Lake's record at the beginning of the 2020-21 season was 12-38)
- Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
- During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.
UW-RIVER FALLS' JEFF BERKHOF
- Jeff Berkhof has been a mainstay of the Falcon basketball program as a player, assistant coach, and now in his 15th season as the head coach of the Falcons. He follows only his predecessor, Rick Bowen, in coaching victories at UW-River Falls with a 190-179Â career record. Berkhof has brought the Falcons to the forefront of Division III college basketball and the WIAC. Since the start of the 2010 season the Falcons have made three NCAA Tournament appearances, have won two WIAC Conference Tournament Championships. The Falcons have played in the WIAC tournament championship game five out of the last nine years and claimed a WIAC regular season championship in 2016-17. The 2017-18 season was the inaugural season in Page Arena and the Falcons went 12-2 at home while finishing the season with a 18-9 overall record. The Falcons made a late season run in the WIAC tournament knocking off #5 Seed UW-Whitewater and #1 Seed UW-Platteville to make it to the WIAC Tournament Championship game before being knocked off by #2 Seed UW-Stevens Point 59-44.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. There will be no WIAC preseason poll this year.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
