Balanced attack leads Blue Devils over University of Dubuque, 80-70

DUBUQUE, Iowa (December 8, 2021) - Amanda Giesen led a balanced attack as five UW-Stout players scored in double figures and the Blue Devils defeated the University of Dubuque, 80-70, Wednesday at Stoltz Center.

Giesen scored a collegiate-high 17 points to lead the way for the Blue Devils (4-4), who broke out on a 15-3 run in the last half of the second period to take a 37-25 halftime lead. Stout led by as much as 21 points - 66-45 and 68-47 - in the fourth quarter and allowed the Spartans (5-3) to only as close as eight points, 76-68, with less than a minute left in the game.

Giesen went 6 of 9 from field and hit her only 3-point attempt and all four free throws. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Stout shot 78.6 percent (11-14) in the third quarter and finished the game shooting 53.7 percent (29-54) from the floor. Stout shot 46.2 percent (6-13) from 3-point range and 76.2 percent (16-21) from the free throw line.

The Blue Devils got 13 points from both Raegan Sorensen and Sam Schaeffer, 12 points from Lizzy Olsem and 10 points from Haylee Yaeger. Schaeffer connected on 3 of 6 3-pointers. Anna Mutch scored eight points and dished off five assists. Lauren Arentz didn't score tonight, but she helped her teammates score, handing off a team season-high seven assists. 

The Spartans got a game-high 24 points from Tabria Thomas, who hit 8 of 10 shots from the floor, 2 of 3 3-pointers and all six free throw attempts. Thomas scored 16 points in the second half. Karsen Kershner finished with 11 points. Dubuque shot 45.8 percent (27-59) from the floor, 11.8 percent (2-17) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (14-21) from the line.

Stout is off until next week when they travel to Gustavus Adolphus College - the sixth team they have faced that is either ranked in the top 25 of the D3hoops.com poll or receiving votes - Wednesday, Dec. 15. Stout will be at Bethany Lutheran College, Saturday, Dec. 18.
