UW-Stout 74, St. Olaf 73
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (November 5, 2021) –
Armani Tinsley scored UW-Stout's final four points of the game including the game-winner with eight seconds remaining to lift the Blue Devils to a 74-73 season-opening win at St. Olaf College Friday.
The Oles (0-1) held as much as an 11-point lead in the first half, led the Blue Devils (1-0) 43-36 at halftime and stretched the lead to as much as 10 points, 56-46, at 13:32 in the second half.
Stout went on a 9-0 run, fueled by a 3-pointer and a free throw by Tinsley, a field goal and free throw from
Luke Geiger and a bucket by
TYreese Alexander to pull to within 56-55 with 9:37 left. The Oles took a 58-55 lead, but a basket and two free throws by
Drew Scott gave Stout their first lead, 59-58, since the first half at 7:13.
The Oles built a four-point, 65-61, lead at 3:47, but a 3-point basket by Stout's
Lovell Williams cut the lead to 65-64. The lead would change hands seven times the rest of the way and was never more than one point and it looked like who had the ball last would win this game.
Tinsley gave Stout a 72-71 lead with 42 seconds left, but a layup by the Ole's Jake Weber swung the lead back to the home team, 73-72. Tinsleya jumper from the right side of the lane for the eventual win, and the Stout defense did not allow the Oles to get off a shot.
Tinsley finished with a game-high 22 points. Geiger added 18 points, Williams 12 and Scott 10. Tinsley, the Blue Devils' leading scorer last season, was 9 of 17 from the floor and 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Geiger was 5 of 9 from the floor, making one 3-pointer, but connected on 7 of 11 free throws. As a team, Stout shot 45.8 percent from the floor (27-59), 35 percent (7-20) from 3-point range and 61.9 percent (13-21) from the line.
The Oles got 20 points from Dominic Bledsoe, 14 points from Nathan Handler and 12 from Niko Polydorou. The Oles shot 48.1 percent (25-52) from the floor, 25 percent (5-20) from 3-point range - including go 0 for 6 in the second half - and 75 percent (18-24) from the line.
St. Olaf held a 35-31 edge in rebounds.
Jon Ciriacks had seven rebounds to lead Stout. Charlie Haff had eight boards to lead all players. Stout committed 13 turnovers to 15 for St. Olaf. Alexander had three steals for Stout.
Stout will be at Northland College, Wednesday, Nov. 10.
