MENOMONIE (November 18, 2021) - Eight UW-Stout football players earned selection to the 2021 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Football Team. Two earned first team selection, four were named to the second team and three were selected to the honorable mention squad.
Blue Devil wide receiver
Levy Hamer (Jr, Chicago, Ill/St. Laurence) earned a first team all-conference selection. Hamer lead all WIAC receivers in total receiving yards (962) and total receiving touchdowns (12). Hamer had four games - three against WIAC foes - where he tallied more than 100-yards receiving. Hamer caught four passes for 152 yards and two TDs against Presentation College in the season opener. Hamer had six receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown against UW-La Crosse, a career-best 11 receptions and 161 yards against UW-Oshkosh and seven receptions for 142 yards and two TDs. Hamer caught at least four passes in every game and scored at least one touchdown in eight of the 10 games. Hamer is currently second on the UW-Stout all-time receiving list with 2813 yards, trailing only Scott Frederickson (3390 yards). Hamer has 26 career TDs for 160 points, ninth on the all-time scoring list. Hamer earned second team honors in 2018 and 2019.
Arthur Cox (So, Dixon, Ill) earned first team all-conference selection for All-Purpose Back for his work as receiver, rusher, and returner. Cox was second in the WIAC for average return yards with 25.5 per return. Cox also held the longest receiving touchdown of the season in the WIAC, catching an 85-yard pass from quarterback
Sean Borgerding against La Crosse. Cox was also a second team all-conference selection for the wide receiver position, catching 42 passes for 629 yards and six touchdowns. This was Cox's first selection to the all-league team.
Offensive lineman
Jacob Foss (So, Eden Prairie, Minn), defensive back
Cannon Griner (So, Mesa, Ariz) and defensive lineman
Scott Gustafson (Jr, Victoria, Minn/Chanhassen) were all second team selections and earned all-conference honors for the first time in their careers.
Foss received this selection in his first year as a 10-game starter and helped the Blue Devils rushing game, as well as kept Borgerding safe while dropping back. The Blue Devil passing game was second in the WIAC, averaging 292.7 yards per game.
Griner was second in the WIAC for solo tackles with 49 as well as interceptions (4) and break-ups (7). His four interceptions led the team and he led the team in tackles with 86 total.
Gustafson was a menace to opposing kickers, as he blocked four field goals and extra points throughout the season, he also was one of the top leaders for Stout in tackles for a loss. Gustafson has six career blocked kicks.
Quarterback
Sean Borgerding (Jr, Spring Valley), center
Justin Schlangen (Jr, Ham Lake, Minn/Blaine) and kicker
Jack Meyer (Fr, Chippewa Falls) were honorable mention selections. Schlangen helped protect the middle while Borgerding dropped back, as well as helping
Matt Pomietlo have an outstanding freshman year. Schlangen moved to the center spot after starting at guard during the 2019 season.
Borgerding received an honorable mention selection for third consecutive year after leading the WIAC in passing touchdowns with 29. Borgerding was also second in most passing yards with 2872 yards, which led him to being the second most efficient quarterback in the WIAC. Borgerding completed 205 of 327 passes, averaging 287.2 yards per game. He had a completion rate of 62.7 percent and was intercepted only eight times. Borgerding currently is third on Stout's all-time passing list with 7404 yards, behind only Matt Bunyan (8562) and Tim Peterson (8881). Bogerding has 67 career touchdowns, behind only Bunyan (85).
It would probably surprise many that Meyer has only been kicking since his junior year in high school. Meyer kicked the longest field goal in the WIAC, nailing a 52-yard field goal early in the season, and missed two that were longer. Meyer made 7 of 11 field goals this season and 12 of 16 extra point attempts. Meyer also had the league's second highest average punting yards (37.2), and booted the second longest punt of 70 yards.
Defensive linemen
Rex Meikle was selected for the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Meikle appeared in five games this season due to injury, but recorded 2.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks.
Stout finished the season at 5-5 overall, 2-5 in the WIAC.
