Blue Devils comeback, lose in overtime to the Johnnies

Box Score MENOMONIE (November 13, 2021) - St. Johns University (2-3-0) had a power play opportunity in overtime and capitalized on having the extra man. The Johnnies beat UW-Stout (0-6-0) 3-2 in overtime on a Nick Michel game winning goal. 

To start the game, both teams came out flying trying to get on the scoreboard first. At 12:24 of the period, St. Johns struck first. Cole Souto scored his first goal of the season with assists from Auggie Moore and Lewis Crosby. 

Less than a minute later, Stout committed the first penalty of the game. The Johnnies capitalized being on a power play and scored at the 13:38 mark of the period. Nick Michel scored to make the game 2-0 in favor of St. Johns. Assists came from Max Borst and Henry Enebak. 

With 3:24 left in the period, Stout went on their first power play, but the Johnnies held the Blue Devils in check and killed off the penalty. 

In the first intermission, St. Johns led on the scoreboard and in shots. 

In back and forth play in the second period, at 9:00 minutes, both teams skated four on four. During the four on four action, Stout got on the scoreboard after Landon Lushanko beat the Johnnies goalie from the hashmarks. Caleb Serre assisted on the score. 

With 5:14 left in the period, Stout went on another power play. But with 4:01 left in the period, the Blue Devils committed a five minute major and both teams skated four on four for 1:13. After the four on four action, St. Johns went on a power play for 3:14. No goals were accounted for before the second period ended. 

St. Johns started on the power play in the third period and the Blue Devils were on the penalty kill for one minute. Stout ended up killing the penalty to get back to even strength. 

At 1:18 of the period, Stout went on a power play, but the Johnnies killed off the penalty. 

At 6:57 of the third period, Stout went on another power play, this time scoring and tying the game at 2-2. Raphael Gosselin tied the game after beating St. John's goalie. 

With time ticking down in the game, the Blue Devils found themselves up one man with 1:54 left in the game and went on a power play. With chances to take the lead, regulation time ended and we headed into overtime. 

In overtime, the Blue Devils started four on three for six seconds, but St. Johns killed off the penalty. 

Only 16 seconds into overtime, Stout took a penalty and saw them down a skater. At 59 seconds into overtime, Johnnies Nick Michel scored his second goal and ended the game, with a final score of 3-2. Henry Enebak and Cole Souto both received assists on the game winning goal. 

St. John's Mac Berglove got the win and recorded 21 saves. Blue Devil's Brennan Kitchen recorded 25 saves. 

Up next for the Blue Devils is a conference matchup against Northland College. The game will be played at Northland College with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
