LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: It seems UW-Stout could do just about anything except score against UW-Whitewater by a 37-6 score. Stout piled up 420 yards of total offense to 358 yards for Whitewater. Stout ran 71 plays to 56 for Whitewater. The Blue Devils held a small advantage in time of possession. Blue Devil quarterback
Sean Borgerding completed 28 of 44 passes to finish with 343 yards - his seventh career 300-plus passing game and Stout finished with 370 total passing yards. But in the end, it really didn't matter as Whitewater took advantage of Stout miscues to win the conference opener and go to 4-0 overall on the season. Perhaps a sign of how the game would go happened on the Blue Devils first drive of the game. The Warhawks stopped Stout on three plays, but the Blue Devils mishandled the snap of the punt and Warhawks fell on the ball at the Stout 3 yard line. It took only one play for running back Alex Peete to find the end zone and, after a successful point after, Whitewater held a 7-0 lead. The Warhawks scored 13 points in the second period as Ryan Wisniewski ran for a 28 yard TD and Max Meylor hit Sam DeLany for a 23-yard score. After Whitewater made it 27-0 in the third period on a one yard run by Peete, Stout had an opportunity to put some points on the board, driving down to as far as the Whitewater 5, but Stout turned the ball over on downs. Later in the period, Stout got down to the Whitewater 30, but again turned the ball over on downs. The Warhawks' Wisniewski had a 14-yard TD reception and Matt Maldonado booted a 39-yard field goal to make it 37-0 midway through the final period. Stout finally got on the board with just under seven minutes left in the game when Borgerding connected with
Patrick Corcoran for a 64 yard touchdown, Corcoran's first collegiate touchdown. But the extra point was missed and the score ended 37-6. The Blue Devils did pile up 420 yards of total offense, well over the Warhawks' allowed defensive average of 181.7 yards coming into the game. Stout missed two second quarter field goals, put the ball on the ground three times, losing one fumble and were 2 for 6 in fourth down chances.
Arthur Cox had a career-best nine receptions for 76 yards.
Levy Hamer had six grabs for 41 yards, Corcoran had four catches for 95 yards and
Rayshawn Graham had three catces for 89 yards, including a 45 yard reception. Stout finished with 50 yards rushing, with Graham netting 35 yards. Bordgerding had a 26 yard rush called back due to a holding penalty, The Warhawks ran for 165 yards and threw for 193 yards. Peete had 18 carries for 69 yards and two scores. Meylor finished with 193 yards of passing, going 14 of 17 with three TD throws.
LAST TIME OUT: UW-EAU CLAIRE: Eau Claire football team began Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Saturday as they were on the road to face UW-Stevens Point. Rookie quarterback Harry Roubidoux took over in the first half and lit a fire for the UW-Eau Claire Blugold offense. Roubidoux's career high 104 passing yards, 22 rushing yards, and two passing touchdowns and four forced turnovers by the Blugold defense earned UWEC the 25-15 WIAC win.
WHEN STOUT AND EAU CLAIRE LAST MET: While UW-Stout still held a two possession lead midway through the fourth quarter, UW-Eau Claire had just made a run at the Blue Devils, scoring two straight touchdowns and Eau Claire had just stopped the Blue Devils to force a punt and get the ball back. But the opportunistic defensive back Jed Schlegel made the play to swing the momentum back to the Blue Devils. Schlegel, playing very tight coverage, wrestled the ball away from the Eau Claire receiver on the Eau Claire 18 to make his third interception of the game. Two plays later, quarterback
Sean Borgerding hit a leaping
Parker Fossum in the end zone for a 17-yard TD to stretch the lead back to a three possession game, 38-17. On the next series, Eau Claire was stopped on downs and six plays later Borgerding found tight end
Blake Purdy for Purdy's second TD reception of the game and Borgerding's fifth touchdown toss of the game and the Blue Devils went on to a 45-17 win and could claim the I-94 trophy and return it to Menomonie.
THE SERIES: Eau Claire leads the series, 51-41-6, but the Blue Devils have won the last five outings.
WAR ON I-94: The War on I-94 Trophy between UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire started in 2008. Eau Claire won the first contest for the trophy at Don and Nona Williams Stadium, Nov. 15, 2008, the final game of the 2008 season. Stout holds a 8-4 lead in the series. The teams played for the Little Brown Jug for two brief stints, once during the 1930s and again in the 1950s. Eau Claire will host the 2021 game on Oct. 9.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: Complete 2021 Blue Devil preview
THE PASSING GAME: The Blue Devils have became a pass-dominant team this year as
Sean Borgerding rises to the top of the WIAC standings. Borgerding has been very efficient this season, completing 81 of 116 passes (69.8 percent) for 1110 yards and 10 TDs. His 69.8 percent completion rate is the highest among starting quarterbacks in the WIAC. He also holds the second spot in total passing yards, average passing yards per game, and quarterback efficency. Borgerding has shared the ball with all of his receivers, completing passes to 11 receivers and throwing TD passes to six different receivers. Among his favorite targets are
Levy Hamer who hauled in three TD passes, catching 20 passes for 288 yards and
Parker Fossum who has 17 catches, 192 yards, and a touchdown.
Arthur Cox and
Robvon Jackson have both pulled in two TD catches.
Patrick Corcoran also has a touchdown, pulling in a 64 yard pass from Borgerding last week agains UW-Whitewater. Fullback
Camron LeMay has the other reception for a score, scampering 16 yards to paydirt.
THE RUNNING GAME: Even with the passing mindset, Stout is still able to keep the ball on the ground and drive through when needed. Coming off a two year hiatus,
Rayshawn Graham has scored seven touchdowns in the first four games. Before this season, Graham hadn't seen a snap since the 2018 season, but is at the top of the WIAC with his seven TDs and 6.2 yards per carry.
Matt Pomietlo has also had 123 yards on only 28 carries so far this season.
Sean Borgerding, Stout's 2019 leading rusher, has let his running back take the bulk of the running. Yet he is still a force to be reckoned with when he gets loose, averaging 9.8 yards per carry with a long 29 yard run against St. Norbert.
TOTAL OFFENSE: Stout is averaging 441.8 yards of total offense, 284.2 passing, 157.5 rushing.
DEFENSE: Stout's defense has been steady this season. The Blue Devils' defense is leading the WIAC in turnovers with eight throughout the first four games.
Mason Priebe and
Cannon Griner have caused opposing quarterbacks to be worried, as they each have two interceptions and handful of breakups. The tight pass defense has given time for
Ethan Olson and
Riley Crotteau to get to the QB. They each have 2.5 sacks, along with
Rex Meikle who has 1.5. The Blue Devils are allowing 128.2 yards rushing, 178.5 yards passing.
CLIMBING THE LADDER: Into their third seasons, both
Levy Hamer and
Sean Borgerding continue their climbs up UW-Stout all-time lists. WR Hamer is currently third on the Stout all-time receiving list with 2139 yards on 138 receptions and jumped over Jesse Diaz (1885) and former teammate Kevion McDonald (1909). Hamer is right on the heels of Hall of Famer Mark Rothwell who is second on the list with 2255 yards. QB Borgerding moved up to fourth on the all-time passing-list with 5642 yards, surpasing Hank Kujak (5367). Next on the list is Nick Ohman (2001-04) with 6401 passing yards. Borgerding has completed 417 of 748 passes, with 48 TDs thrown. This places him fourth on the all-time TD thrown list, behind Nick Ohman (56) again.
Rayshawn Graham is currently 16th on the UW-Stout all-time rushing list and if he keeps up his pace, he will climb a long ways up.
THE KICKING GAME: Freshman
Jack Meyer has been the leg for Stout's special teams. Meyer is four for six on field goal attempts, with a long of 52. He also has been steady on PATs with 11 for 15. Meyer also has shown off his strength with punting, averaging 39.9 yards per boot, with a long of 70 yards, that coming at Whitewater.
PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils
finished in a fifth in the competitive WIAC in 2019 and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish fifth in 2021
. UW-Whitewater is picked to finish first, UW-Oshkosh second, UW-Platteville third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Stout fifth, UW-Stevens Point sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh and UW-River Falls eighth.
WHO'S WHO: EAU CLAIRE: Eau Claire has kept the ball on the ground this season, leading the WIAC in total rushing yards and rushing yards per game. Auston Belot leads the Blugolds with 681 yards in their first four games. Belot ran for a school record 365 yards in the season opener against Luther College. Belot's 681 is the most in the WIAC, over 200 yard more than Stout's own Rayshawn Graham who is second in the WIAC. Belot ranks third in the NCAA in yards per game, averaging 170.2 yards per game and is third nationally in yards per carry at 8.5 per tote. When the Blugolds do throw the ball, they rely on senior quarterback Jonathon Maleug and sophomore Harry Roubidoux. Malueg has 296 yards off of 32 completions. Roubidoux has 109 yards off of 10 completions. The two quarterbacks have thrown more interceptions this year than touchdowns (5 TDs, 6 INT). Tight end Joe Swanson is the leading receiver for Eau Claire with only 51 yards on 6 receptions. On the defensive side of the ball, the Blugolds have held opponents to an average of two touchdowns a game. Eau Claire's defense is led by their three senior linebackers Alex Mashak, Spencer Van Pietersom, and Vic Martinelli. Mashak averages 7.0 tackles a game, while Van Pietersom and Martinelli pressure the quarterback with 2.0 and 2.5 sacks, respectively. Cornerback Carmelo Rosado has two interceptions this year, tying for first in the WIAC with Stout's Priebe and Griner. | Statistics

BIG KICKOFF RETURNS: Noel Gonzalez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 5, 2016 at Stevens Point. The return was the longest return since Mike Bechtel returned a 98-yard kickoff return against UW-Whitewater, Oct. 14, 1995 on the Blue Devils' homecoming. Carlos Concepcion returned a kick 90 yards against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 23, 2010. Jesse Wendt, who holds the school single season record for kickoff return average, returned a kickoff 90 yards in 2004. Tony Beckham did not have any 90-plus yard returns, but in back-to-back seasons, the future NFL draftee returned an 88-yard kickoff and an 89-yard return in 2000 and 2001, respectively.
FIELD GOAL BLOCK & RETURN: During the 2015 season, Travis Shackleton blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Oct. 10, 2015, and Enzo Rosani scooped up the ball on the La Crosse 14, returning it 86 yards for a score. The blocked kick was Shackleton's first career block and the touchdown was Rosani's first collegiate TD. There was no mention in the UW-Stout, the WIAC or the NCAA record books for returning blocked field goal attempts. There is now a category in the Stout record book. After sending out a request to NCAA Division III sports information directors, the following list of blocked field goals was compiled.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season.
DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: UW-Stout's Don and Nona Williams Stadium got a facelift in 2018 with the installation of an updated surface. FieldTurf installed the FieldTurf Revolution 360. FieldTurf promotes this surface as having "optimal durability, resilience, and feel." A padding/drainage mat will be added, as well as flushing the current drainage system to make sure the field sheds water as designed. The field's layout will be similar to the previous markings and will again include markings for high school hash marks. The S logo at midfield has been replaced by the new Blaze head logo. The stadium, which was opened during the 2001 season, last had the stadium turf replaced during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembled natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. At the time, the Wisconsin Badgers were the only Wisconsin college team that played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, every WIAC school has an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.
UP NEXT: The homecoming game will return after a one-year absence when the Blue Devils host UW-Stevens Point, Saturday Oct. 16 at 1 p.m.
