LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: What started out as a sprint, ended in a marathon as UW-Stout outlasted UW-Eau Claire 38-34 to win their sixth consecutive game over the Blugolds in the "War on 94" series Saturday at Carson Park. In a game that saw nearly 300 yards of offense by each team and a combined 52 points in the first half alone came down to a game in the trenches and the Blue Devils' back-up tailback, Matt Pomietlo, would come up big. Stout led 28-24 at halftime, but the Blue Devils turned the ball over twice in the third quarter, lost 250-pound tailback Rayshawn Graham to injury and gave up the lead at 4:56 in the third quarter. After the Blugolds' Sam Burzynski intercepted Stout quarterback Sean Borgerding at the Eau Claire 45, the Blugolds went the 55 yards in eight plays, capped off by a quarterback run by Harry Roubidoux to take a 31-28 lead. When this contest wrapped up, Stout finished with 421 yards of total offense, while the Blugolds finished with 439 yards of offense. Borgerding completed 16 of 28 passes for 282 yards and two TDs. Fossum finished with five catches for 125 yards. Hamer had five grabs for 85 yards and Cox had three receptions for 53 yards. Before he left the game, Graham had piled up 100 yards on the ground, his third 100-yard game of the season. With the two TDs, he ran his touchdowns to nine on the season at the midway point. Pomietlo rolled up 52 yards on 14 carries.  Roubidoux completed 13 of 24 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns. Jones had three catches for 112 yards and Swanson had four receptions for 91 yards. Austin Belot had 27 rushes for 128 yards.

LAST TIME OUT: UW-STEVENS POINT:  Stevens Point couldn't contain the speed displayed by visiting UW-River Falls in a 56-20 loss in the Homecoming game on Oct. 9. UWRF needed just five plays in the opening drive to find the end zone.  Max Herro in turn, led the Pointers down the field on a nine play drive capped by a four-yard scamper by Jahi Stigall to tie the game at 7-7. The Falcons scored touchdowns on each of their next four drives to take a commanding 35-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. The onslaught continued as UWRF found the end zone again on the Falcons' first offensive drive of the third quarter. Later in the third, Herro hit Jeremy Kobe for a 35-yard touchdown, but a penalty took the score off the board.  Herro continued to persevere completing three straight, including a 27-yard connection with Kobe for a touchdown.

WHEN STOUT AND STEVENS POINT LAST MET: Rayshawn Graham ran for three touchdowns and a career-high 199 yards as UW-Stout extended their winning streak to four games over UW-Stevens Point with a 45-14 win September 18 at Goerke Field. Graham capped off his day with a 75-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to give Stout (3-0) what would prove to be the final 45-14 lead. Graham had scoring runs of six yards in the second quarter and one yard in the first quarter. Blue Devil quarterback Sean Borgerding threw for three touchdowns, hitting Robvon Jackson for 33 yards in the first quarter, Levy Hamer for 12 yards in the second quarter and 53 yards to Arthur Cox in the third quarter.  Borgerding completed 17 of 27 yards for 226 yards and the three scores.

THE SERIES: Stevens Point leads the series, 51-22-2, but the Blue Devils have won the last four outings, including the non-conference game in September 2021.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:  Complete 2021 Blue Devil preview

THE PASSING GAME: The Blue Devils continue to excel in the air as QB, Sean Borgerding, rises to the top of the WIAC standings, becoming the second most efficient WIAC quarterback this season. Borgerding has completed 97 of 144 passes (67.4 percent) for 1392 yards and 12 TDs. He holds the second spot in total passing yards, average passing yards per game, and completion percentage among starting WIAC quarterbacks. Borgerding also makes sure to get all his recievers involved, completing passes to 11 receivers and throwing TD passes to six different receivers. Among his favorite targets are Levy Hamer who hauled in four TD passes, catching 25 passes for 373 yards and Parker Fossum who has 22 catches, 317 yards, and two touchdowns including a long of 72 yards at UW-Eau Claire last week. Arthur Cox rounds out the top three Stout recievers with 20 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Robvon Jackson has two recieving touchdowns, with Patrick Corcoran and Fullback Camron LeMay each having one.

THE RUNNING GAME: The pass-first mindset hasn't slowed down Stout's running backs, as they capitalize on the carries they get. Rayshawn Graham recorded another 100+ yard game against UW-Eau Claire last week where he also found the endzone twice on only 18 carries. Graham leads Stout in scoring with nine touchdowns on the season. Freshman Matt Pomietlo has also come up big for Stout carrying the ball for 176 yards on 42 carries. Pomietlo also scored his first collegiate touchdown last week at UW-Eau Claire. Stout's 2019 leading rusher, QB Sean Borgerding hasn't been as active on the ground as he was two years ago, but he is still a force to be reckoned with when he gets loose, with a long 29 yard run against St. Norbert.

TOTAL OFFENSE: Stout is averaging 438.0 yards of total offense, 283.8 passing, 154.2 rushing.

DEFENSE: Stout's defense has been one of the best in the WIAC this season, tied for first in turnovers with nine (seven interceptions, two fumble recoveries) so far this season. Mason Priebe and Cannon Griner have caused opposing quarterbacks to be worried, as they each have two interceptions and a handful of breakups. Carson Strong, Gervase Thompson, and Haydon Miller have also taken the ball back each with an interception. This tight pass defense has given time for Ethan Olson and Riley Crotteau to get to the QB. They each have 2.5 sacks, along with Rex Meikle who has 1.5. The Blue Devils are allowing 333.2 yards of offense per game, 129.2 yards rushing and 204.0 yards passing.

CLIMBING THE LADDER: Well into their third seasons, both Levy Hamer and Sean Borgerding continue their climbs up UW-Stout all-time lists. WR Hamer has 2224 yards  on 143 receptions which makes him just shy of Hall of Famer Mark Rothwell, who is second on the list with 2255 yards. After Rothwell, Hamer will be on his way to try and catch Scott Frederickson (1986-89) who has 3390 yards receiving in his time at Stout. QB Borgerding moved up to fourth on the all-time passing-list with 5924 yards, surpassing Hank Kujak (5367). Next on the list is Nick Ohman (2001-04) with 6401 passing yards. Borgerding has completed 433 of 776 passes, with 50 TDs thrown. This places him fourth on the all-time TD thrown list, behind Nick Ohman (56) again. Others of note are Rayshawn Graham, who is currently 14th on the UW-Stout all-time rushing list (1568), and Parker Fossum, who is in 24th for all-time receiving yards (1002).

THE KICKING GAME: Freshman Jack Meyer has been the leg for Stout's special teams. Meyer is five for seven on field goal attempts, with a long of 52. Meyer had a 51 yard field goal at UW-Eau Claire last week and was selected the WIAC special teams player of the week. Meyer also has shown off his strength with punting, averaging 40.7 yards per boot, with a long of 70 yards, that coming at Whitewater on Oct. 2. Luke Cool took over kicking the extra points for Stout last week against UW-Eau Claire where he went three for four on PATs. Meyer booted a collegiate-best 52-yard field goal against St. Norbert in September, the longest kick among conference players and is tied in the NCAA Division III as the second-longest field goal of the season. Meyer is tied with Wheaton (Ill) Tommy Gallagher for second. Gettysburg's Doug Cummings has kicked a 55-yard field. Meyer's 51-yard kick is the fourth-longest kick of the season in Division III. The longest kick of the season across the NCAA is a 57-yard kick by Ben Raybon of Northern Colorado, affiliated with the FCS Division.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished fifth in the competitive WIAC in 2019 and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish fifth in 2021. UW-Whitewater is picked to finish first, UW-Oshkosh second, UW-Platteville third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Stout fifth, UW-Stevens Point sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh and UW-River Falls eighth.

WHO'S WHO: STEVENS POINT: UW-Stevens Point reaches the midpoint of the season (2-3 0-2 WIAC). Quarterback Max Herro hadn't seen a play since he started the season opener in 2019 before suffering a season ending injury. Throughout the first five games in the 2021 season, Herro has thrown for 744 yards on 61 completions. Herro has been able to send the ball the end zone seven times, but has a tendency to give the ball to the defense with five interceptions so far this season. Leading the Pointers receiving corp is Joe Hare, who has four touchdowns this season, and Joe Aguilera who leds Stevens Point with 242 yards receiving. In the backfield, Vercion Gammel has had the majority of carries, picking up 303 yards and a touchdown on 78 carries. Jahi Stigall, who is listed as a wide receiver, has received some snaps at running back, picking up two rushing touchdowns on only 18 carries. On the defensive end, the Pointers have come up with a number of turnovers, with six interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Jawahn Downing has two interceptions and Gavin Tachick picked up one of the fumbles. On the D-line Malik Smith and Ahmad Blake have each picked up three sacks, which tie them for second in the WIAC. |  Statistics

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Clayt Birmingham (44-60) is in his 12th season in 2021 as the UW-Stout head coach. Before coming to Stout, Birmingham coached at Western Michigan, Emporia College and UW-Stevens Point. Birmingham was the UW-Stout defensive coordinator for three years before assuming the head coaching role. Birmingham played his college football at UW-Stevens Point. UW-Stevens Point: Greg Breitbach (19-61) enters his fourth season at the helm of the UWSP football team in 2021. The Pointers earned three home victories under Breitbach in 2019, including a home-opening win over No. 21 Wabash. UWSP picked up nine All-WIAC honors in 2019 and junior Donovan Lucas earned All-West Region honors. In his first season, he led the Pointers to four wins, including a victory over then-No. 10 UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 27, one of two wins in the final three games of the season.  He coached 10 All-WIAC players, including WIAC Special Teams Player of the Year, Christian Almonte. He was named head football coach on July 2, 2018 and came to UWSP after spending five seasons as head coach at Millersville University, a Division II program in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

COACHING STAFF: Head coach Clayt Birmingham works with the defensive backs. Travis Destache returns as the defensive coordinator and also works with the linebackers. Destache was named the WIAC assistant coach of the year by the WFCA in 2017. Destache is in his 15th season with the Blue Devils and ninth as defensive coordinator. Nick Pesik begins his third season as the Blue Devil offensive coordinator, coming to Stout after three years as the wide receivers coach at UW-Whitewater. Derek Branch is in his eighth season with the Blue Devils. An all-conference offensive lineman with the Blue Devils during his playing years, Branch will work with the offensive line. COACH BIRMINGHAM AS A POINTER: UW-Stout coach Clayt Birmingham was a four-year regular in the defensive backfield during his playing days with the Pointers. Birmingham was a two-time All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defensive back at UW-Stevens Point (1995, 1994). In 1994, Birmingham was the WIAC interceptions co-leader. So we had to dig into the files to find out how Coach Birmingham fared against the Blue Devils. On Oct. 22, 1994 on Nelson Field in Menomonie, as Stout was driving for a TD, Birmingham stepped in front of a Forrest Schneider pass in the end zone to end the threat. On Oct. 23, 1993 in Stevens Point, Birmingham recorded a five-yard sack. As a player, Birmingham's Pointers did not lose to Stout in his four years. PROMOTIONS PLANNED FOR 2021: The Blue Devils will host a combination Community Day, Youth Day and Dorm Days as the Blue Devils welcome fans back to Don and Nona Wiliams Stadium after a one year hiatus. The Oct. 16 game vs. UW-Stevens Point is Homecoming and is sponsored by Erbert and Gerbert's. The Oct. 30 game vs. UW-Oshkosh is sponsored by Bill's Distributing and the Nov. 6 game vs. UW-River Falls is Military Appreciation Day and Senior Day and is sponsored by Westconsin Credit Union.

MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season.

TAILGATING: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.

DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: UW-Stout's Don and Nona Williams Stadium got a facelift in 2018 with the installation of an updated surface. FieldTurf installed the FieldTurf Revolution 360. FieldTurf promotes this surface as having "optimal durability, resilience, and feel." A padding/drainage mat will be added, as well as flushing the current drainage system to make sure the field sheds water as designed. The field's layout will be similar to the previous markings and will again include markings for high school hash marks. The S logo at midfield has been replaced by the new Blaze head logo. The stadium, which was opened during the 2001 season, last had the stadium turf replaced during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembled natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. At the time, the Wisconsin Badgers were the only Wisconsin college team that played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, every WIAC school has an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will travel to UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Oct. 23.
