OSHKOSH (February 25, 2020) - UW-Oshkosh put an end to UW-Stout's season with a 68-60 decision at Kolf Sports Center Tuesday in the first round of the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's).
The Blue Devils (15-11) were never able to grab the lead and made several runs at the Titans (16-10), including pulling to within two points midway through the final period after trailing 42-29 with 3:51 left in the third period. Stout went on a 21-10 run during that stretch, getting a balanced scoring attack.
Emily Jacques chipped in six points in the run,
Katie Christopherson five,
Shannan Watkins four, and
Amber Fabeck,
Liz Oswald and
Becky Fesenmaier each contributing a basket. But the Titans would outscore the Blue Devils 16-10 down the final stretch. Oshkosh would lead by as much as 12 points, but twice Stout cut the lead down to six points, the final time with four seconds left on a 3-pointer by Oswald.
Oshkosh led 26-22 after the first half, but Oshkosh's Nikki Arneson turned up her scoring in the second half, After scoring five first half points, Arneson tallied 24 second half points to finish with a game-high 29 points. Leah Porath added 12 points and Karsyn Rueth finished with 11.
The 3-pointer was key for the Titans, hitting five treys in each half to total 10. The Blue Devils hit six 3-pointers, five in the second half.
The Blue Devils were led by
Amber Fabeck with 14. Jacques and Oswald each scored 10 points. Stout shot 36.1 percent from the floor (22-61). 28.6 percent from beyond the arc (6-21) and 83.3 percent from the line (10-12). The Titans shot 47.7 percent from the floor (21-44), 52.6 percent from 3-point range (10-19) and 69.6 percent from the line (16-23).
The Titans defeated Stout last season in the second round of the WIAC Championship. The teams split during the regular season. Oshkosh will be at UW-Whitewater, Thursday, Feb. 27 in a second round contest.
The game marked the final contest for Blue Devil seniors Fabeck, Watkins, Jacques, Fesenmaier and
Kelsey Kainz.
