CARBONDALE, Ill (February 22, 2020) -Â The UW-Stout baseball team opened the 2020 season with a pair of wins on the Southern Illinois University campus, blanking Wilmington College, 5-0, in the opener and powering their way past Blackburn College, 11-4, in the second of two nine-inning games.
Cody Urban recorded the shutout win and
James Palmer gave up one run to get the win over Blackburn. Shortstop
Charlie Szykowny was a combined 5 for 9 on the day.
Game One Overview
In the opener,
Cody Urban picked up the win striking out five and scattering four hits over four innings and
Ethan Kjellberg recorded his first collegiate save in his first collegiate game, allowing two hits in working the final three innings of the contest.

The Blue Devils got to work right away defensively and offensively, turning a double play in the top of the first inning then scoring two runs on RBIs by
Hunter Merrill, with a double, and
Joel Thimsen on an infield groundout. Stout added two runs in the seventh on a Charlie Szkowny triple and an error. Szykowny drove in a run in the eighth inning.

Game Two Overview
James Palmer recorded the win in the second game, working five innings, allowing five hits, one run and striking out four.

Blackburn touched Palmer for a single run in the bottom of the first, but Stout responded with a run in the second and fourth, then racked up four runs in the fifth, highlighted by
Danny Deis' bases loaded three-run double. Stout added three more runs in the ninth.

Szykowny was 2 for 4 with two RBI against Wilmington and 3 for 5 with two RBI against Blackburn.
Kasey Bass was 2 for 3 against Blackburn, as was Deis.

Stout plays 21st ranked North Central College Sunday, Feb. 23 in Joliet, Ill.
