Fabeck scores five in overtime to lift Stout over Pointers

UW-Stout 72, UW-Stevens Point 71

STEVENS POINT (February 19, 2020)Amber Fabeck scored five points in overtime to lift UW-Stout a 72-71 win over UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at Berg Gym.

Shannan Watkins' 3-pointer with 1:54 left in regulation was the final score of regulation to send the game in extra time.

After no one scored for almost the final two minutes of regulation, Fabeck gave Stout the lead in overtime with a bucket 13 seconds into the period. The Pointers' Taylor Greenheck tied the score with two free throws, tying the score for the 14th time in the game.

The Pointers (9-15, 4-9 WIAC) shot ahead, 69-67, on a pair of free throws by Kellan Schmidt at 3:11 and nearly two minutes later Schmidt gave the Pointers a four point lead, 72-67, with 1:32 remaining.

Emily Jacques pulled Stout (15-9, 6-7 WIAC) to within two points, 71-69, at 1:17 and Fabeck popped a 3-pointer with eight seconds left for what would prove to be the final score.

But the drama was far from over. Katie Christopherson stole the ball, was fouled and missed both chances. The Pointers' Bailee Collins rebounded and the Pointers called timeout, after which Watkins put the game on ice with her fourth steal of the night.

The Pointers' Taylor Greenhead led all scorers with 17 points. Schmidt finished with 15 and Carly Cerrato and Amber Baehman each had 11 points.

Fabeck led Stout with 16 points, five in the overtime period. Liz Oswald scored 14 and Lindsey Johnson 10.  Fabeck and Johnson each had eight rebounds as the Blue Devils held a 50-28 advantage off the glass.

Stout needed to overcome the Pointers' advantage at the free throw line. Stevens Point shot a stellar 89.3 percent, dropping in 25 of 28 charity shots. Stout was 7 of 11 from the line.

The game was Stout's fourth overtime game of the season and their third overtime win. The win gives Stout a berth in the WIAC Championship tournament next Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Stout closes out the regular season when they host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.
