Gustavus Adolphus 41, UW-Stout 31
MENOMONIE (September 14, 2019) - In the second quarter, UW-Stout led Gustavus Adolphus, 17-14, but the Gusties found a rhythm and blasted 27 unanswered points. The 27 unanswered points were enough as Gustavus beat the Blue Devils with a score of 41-31.Â
In the first quarter, the Gusties were the first team to put points on the board. With 8:09 left in the quarter, Michael Veldman found Josh Kirk in the back of the endzone for a touchdown. Gustavus would go for two and converted when Veldman ran on a quarterback sneak.Â
Stout was not fazed by the eight point deficit as they went down and scored on a
Nick Arguedas 18 yard touchdown run. Stout went for two and
Sean Borgerding found
Devan Greene to make the score even at 8-8.Â
The second quarter started off with a fumble recovery by the Gusties. Off of a bad handoff, Stout's
Dylan Peterson was able to fall on the ball to give the Blue Devils the ball back. The next play,
Sean Borgerding completed a 57 yard touchdown pass to
Levy Hamer to give the Blue Devils the lead at 15-8.Â
The Gusties didn't back down as Michael Veldman ran in for a touchdown with a quarterback keeper to make the score 15-14.
Again Gustavus went for a two point conversion. Veldman scrambled and tried to find a receiver open, but couldn't find a Gustie. Instead, Blue Devil's
Dylan Peterson intercepted a pass and ran down field. Before getting tackled, Peterson flipped the ball over to
Jed Schlegel. Schlegel would take it 80 yards for a defensive two points. The score saw 17-14 in favor of the Blue Devils. The last time the Blue Devils scored a defensive extra point was on Nov. 18, 2000 in the first round of the NCAA playoffs against St. John's when Abraham Cruz intercepted the ball and scored.
After the defensive two points, it was all Gustavus as they fired off 21 unanswered points. The Gusties' Veldman found Brice Panning in the endzone for a 17 yard touchdown to retake the lead. Before half, Gustavus' David Peal ran one in for a touchdown to make the score 28-17 at halftime.Â
On the first possession for the Gusties in the third quarter, Veldman threw for his third touchdown pass connecting with Josh Kirk. After a three and out for the Blue Devils, Veldman ran another touchdown in to make the score 41-17.Â
With 1:11 left to go in the game, Stout's
Sean Borgerding ran one in to give Stout a chance at a comeback. After a fourth down stop, Stout would get the ball back with 43 seconds left to play. With 15 seconds to go in the game, Borgerding threw a ball up in the endzone and
Tyler Seymour powered his way through defenders to catch his second touchdown of the year. The final score of the game was 41-31.Â
For Stout,
Sean Borgerding finished the game 22-46 with 278 yards passing to go along with two touchdowns. Borgerding also had 40 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Gusties quarterback, Michael Veldman finished the game with 249 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air. Veldman also ran for 44 yards and two touchdowns.Â
Levy Hamer had eight receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown.
Tyler Seymour added four receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown. Gustavus' Josh Kirk led the receiving core with eight receptions and 114 and two touchdowns.Â
On the ground,
Nick Arguedas led the Blue Devils with 38 yards and a touchdown. The Gustie's David Peal finished with 60 yards and a touchdown.Â
Jed Schlegel led the defensive attack for the Blue Devils with 13 total tackles, one pass broken up, and a forced fumble.
Luke Wilz had 10 tackles.Â
The Blue Devils have a bye next weekend, but travel to Thousand Oaks, California as they take on California Lutheran on September 28.Â

The last time the Blue Devils scored a defensive extra point was on Nov. 18, 2000 in the first round of the NCAA playoffs against St. John's when Abraham Cruz intercepted the ball and scored.
