Blugolds take a pair of conference games from Devils

UW-Eau Claire 5, UW-Stout 1 | UW-Eau Claire 4, UW-Stout 3

MENOMONIE (April 24, 2019) - Katelyn Schobert slid across home plate, promptly jumped up and slammed her helmet to the ground. Her run wouldn't count. She advanced to home on a two-out groundout and the game was over. UW-Stout was beaten by UW-Eau Claire, 4-3, Wednesday, at Alumni Field. The loss came on the heels of a series-opening 5-1 loss to the Blugolds.

Schobert's actions portrayed the frustrations the Blue Devils (15-16, 4-6 WIAC) felt in the losses.

.In the nightcap, the Blue Devils took the first lead, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Schobert scored on Meghan Kelly's double after being hit by a pitch to get on base.

But the Blugolds (21-6-1, 7-2-1 WIAC) came back to tie the score in the second, then took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. The Blue Devils tied the score in the third inning when Kelly's RBI single to center field scored Kyncaide Diedrich. But Stout left the bases load.

Eau Claire used a two-run fifth inning to take the lead, but this time it was the Blugolds who left the bases full, but lead 4-2. Kelly made it 4-3 when she airmailed a pitch over the left field fence.

Stout pitcher Melea Bruns would not allow a base-runner the rest of the way.

Stout was left with their chance in the bottom of the seventh, trailing by one run with the top of the order due up. Mary Iliopoulos led off with a single, but then was called out when her stolen base was overturned because of batter interference on the throw. Schobert singled and advanced to second on the overthrow. The next two batters walked to load the bases with two outs. But the slow roller to third base resulted in the final out of the game as Schobert slid into home with the hope to tie the game.

The Blue Devils left nine total runners on base in the second game.

Stout could never catch up in game one. The Blugolds, who moved into first place of the WIAC with the wins, scored twice in the second inning and two more times in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Blue Devils got their only run of the game when Renee Murphy came on as a pinch hitter and scored Jessica Caley, who had led off the inning with a single. An unearned run in the fifth gave the Blugolds the final 5-1 score.

Kelly was 3-for-3 in game two with three RBI and was 1-for-3 in the first game. Schobert was 2-for-2 in the second game and 1-for-3 in the opener.

The Blue Devils are scheduled to travel to UW-River Falls, Thursday, April 25 and host UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, April 27.
