Late inning runs doom Blue Devils in Florida

MIT 3, UW-Stout 2 | Wellesley 4, UW-Stout 1

CLERMONT, Fla (March 23, 2019) - UW-Stout held leads in both games, but late inning runs by their opponents spelled two defeats for the Blue Devils on their second day of the PFX Athletics Spring Games Saturday. The  Blue Devils lost 3-2 to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and 4-1 to Wellesley College.

Against fifth-ranked MIT, the Blue Devils scored single runs in the third and fourths innings to jump out a 2-0 lead. Mary Iliopoulos popped out a one-out infield single in the third inning, then moved on Jessica Christiansen's sacrifice bunt. Kyncaide Diedrich's single up the middle plated Iliopoulos and Stout led 1-0. The Blue Devils doubled their lead in the fourth inning when Jessica Daley's triple down the right field line brought home pinch runner Kate Horn

The Engineers (3-0) got to Blue Devil pitcher Sommer Kunstmann with a run in the sixth inning, then added two runs in the top of the seventh on Devon Goetz's double to right center.

Stout (4-3) finished with four hits, while the Engineers recorded seven. Kunstmann struck out two and walked one. MIT's Ravenne Nasser struck out six and walked one.

Against Wellesley (3-1), the Blue Devils opened the game with a run in the top of the first. Korin Hall reached on a lead-off infield single, advanced to second on Mary Iliopoulos's misplayed fielders choice, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on Meghan Kelly's sacrifice fly.

Unfortunately, that would be it for Stout score. Wellesley answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. The Blue Devils left the bases loaded in the third inning and stranded 10 runners in all.

The Blue Devils gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Jill O'Shea driving in two runs on a double.

Stout recorded six hits to five for Wellesley.  Hall was 2 for 4 with a runs scored to lead Stout. Kim Labahn worked 5.2 innings, but Kelly absorbed the loss.

The Blue Devils will face Tufts University and the University of Minnesota-Morris Sunday.
