MENOMONIE (February 1, 2019) - In a fast paced, WIAC matchup, UW-Stevens Point (20-0-2, 5-0-0) scored two second period goals to beat UW-Stout (13-8-1, 0-4-1) with a score of 3-1.
Out of the gate, the Blue Devils used their speed and physical play to control most of the first half of the period. Shots at the eight minute mark were in favor of Stout, 5-1. At the 8:06 mark of the first period, Stout went onto the power play. Setting it up multiple times, Stout couldn't get much going only having one shot on goal and no goals.
With just over nine minutes left to play in the period, both teams went four on four, but no goals were accounted for. Both teams went into their locker rooms with no goals. Shots were in favor of the Blue Devils, 10-9.
In the second period, the Pointers' B.J. Duffin scored his fourth goal on the season getting the puck in the back of the net at the 8:46 mark of the period. Stephan Beauvais recorded the only assist on the goal to make the game 1-0.
With just under four minutes left in the period, Stevens Point's Stephan Beauvais shot the puck at the point and Ryan Bittner tipped a goal in front of the net to make the cushion 2-0.
The Blue Devils tried to get things going at the end of the second period and beginning of the third period, but the Pointers' Tanner Karty scored his seventh goal on the season in front of the net to beat Ahlgren just under a minute into the period. Stephan Beauvais recorded the assist and was rewarded a play maker in the game to make the score 3-0.
Stout wouldn't back down and had chances to score, but couldn't get the puck in the net. But
Lucas Carroll scored his seventh goal of the season with just under six minutes left in the game.
Dylan Zins and
Steven Mordini recorded assists on the goal to make the game 3-1.
The game went back and forth at the end of the period and Stout pulled Ahlgren with a minute and a half left in the game. The Blue Devils couldn't pull within one goal and would go down 3-1 to #1 Stevens Point.
Stevens Point's Eli Billing recorded 24 saves and the win.
Tommi Ahlgren stopped 23 shots on net. Shots were in favor of Stevens Point 26-25.
