Volleyball Preview: Senior Day Friday as Stout heads into final weekend

THIS WEEK'S MATCHES: The Blue Devils (19-9, 1-5 WIAC) close out the regular season when they host Minnesota-Morris (14-11, 7-1 UMAC) on Senior Day, Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m., then will be at UW-La Crosse (15-13, 1-5 WIAC) Saturday, Nov. 2 at 12 p.m. The Blue Devils defeated Morris, 3-2, in September. 

SENIOR DAY: The Blue Devils will recognize their six seniors, McKylie Hoff, Jessica DuVal, Summer Garr, Steph Cannon, Kara Simonson and Emily Makina, at the completion of the Minnesota-Morris match.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout split two matches playing in their final tournament of the season, falling in the opener, 3-2, to host Concordia University Wisconsin, but bouncing back to beat Carroll University for the second time this season, 3-1, at the Concordia Invitational Saturday. Lexie Nelson recorded a triple-double in both matches. Against Concordia, Nelson had 14 kills, 25 assists and 25 digs. In the second match against Carroll, Nelson had a match-high 17 kills, 19 assists and 14 digs. Steph Cannon matched a season-high by popping up 39 digs in the opener to Concordia. THE BLUE DEVILS IN 2019: Lexie Nelson leads the Blue Devils in kills, averaging 2.65 kills per set, eighth in the WIAC, and is second on the team in assists with 4.53  per set. Freshman Lydia Kneubuehl is second in kills with 2.45 and Amber Ripley is averaging 2.15. Kneubuehl leads Stout in blocks with 0.75, which includes 77 block assists, seventh in the WIAC. Jessica DuVal leads the team in assists, averaging 5.39, seventh in the WIAC. Steph Cannon leads the league in digs with 5.97 per set, a mark that ranks her 20th nationally. Cannon, who set the school career digs record last season, now has 2191 for her career.  As a team, Stout is second in the WIAC in service aces, averaging 1.90 per set, and has four players among the top 15 in the conference. Nelson ranks third (0.41), Ripley is fifth (0.40), Cannon is 10th (0.32) and Emily Makina is 14th (0.29).  The Blue Devils have surpassed last season's wins total and have won 13 3-0 decisions so far this year.  The conference schedule has proved to be a challenge for the Blue Devils. Their one conference win was a 3-2 decision over UW-Eau Claire, while their conference losses have either been 3-2 or 3-1 scores.   | 2019 Statistics 2019 Complete Season Preview

MILESTONE MARKERS: Every time Steph Cannon collects a dig this season, she will break her own career school record.. Last season, Cannon shot down the school career digs record, collecting 1564 digs over three seasons, topping Alicia Mizer's four-year total of 1510. Accomplishing the feat in three season, as a freshman, Cannon collected 341 digs. Injury kept her out of action the following year, but when she returned, Cannon was moved to the libero spot where she had 548 digs. She finished the 2018 season with a school record 675 digs, breaking the school record of 657 by Peyton Schultz in 2015. Twelve times last season, Cannon had more than 25 digs in a single match. Senior setter Jessica DuVal had 2770 career assists coming into the 2019 season. The three year starter had 867 assists her freshman year, 923 as a sophomore and 980 as a junior.

UPDATED MILESTONE MARKERS: Steph Cannon now has 2191 career digs and 627 digs this season. Twenty-one times this season Cannon has recorded 20 or more digs in a single match. Jessica DuVal now has 3336 career assists and is fourth on the UW-Stout all-time assists list. 


MINNESOTA-MORRIS:   The Cougars shared the UMAC Championship with Northwestern and St. Scholastica. The Cougars have four players that averaging more than two kills per set - Brenda Tinjum (2.83), Tori Everson (2.76), Morgan Miller (2.62) and Mia Frick (2.36). Layne Herrmann is averaging 10.14 assists per set and Miller leads the team in blocks with 24 solo and 58 assisted.  |  2019 Statistics

THE COUGARS LAST TIME OUT:  Minnesota-Morris closed out the 2019 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season with a 3-0 loss (25-10, 25-20, 25-6) at Northwestern  Wednesday night. Despite the loss, the Cougars finished as tri-conference champions with Northwestern and St. Scholastica. The Eagles set the tone early in the first set by jumping out to a 7-2 lead. The Cougars brought the first set within four points at 9-5, but the Eagles continued to attack and finished out the opening set with a 25-10 win. The second set saw UMN Morris take a 7-2 lead over Northwestern, but the Eagles chipped away at the Cougar lead and ended up taking a 13-12 lead. The two teams went back-and-forth down the stretch and ultimately Northwestern took the second set, 25-20. It was all Northwestern in the third set as the Eagles took a 13-1 lead over UMN Morris. The Eagles used a 9-0 run to take the third set, 25-6, and the match victory.  | Northwestern Game Story and Statistics 

LAST TIME THEY MET:   The teams met Sept. 14 at the Bethel University tournament and the Cougars  took a 3-2 win. Against Minnesota-Morris, Lexie Nelson racked up 17 kills and Amber Ripley had 12. Morgan Miller had 16 to lead Morris. The Blue Devils won the first two sets 25-22, 25-16, but the Cougars came back to sweep the final three sets, 25-18, 25-23, 15-12. Jessica DuVal had 27 assists and Nelson 20.  Layne Herrmann had 41 assists for Morris. UW-LA CROSSE: Emma Lawrence is second in the WIAC in kills at 4.21. Abby Fox is third in the league in assist with 8.51 and Anna Rossner is second in the league in blocks, averaging 1.02, with 19 solo and 83 assisted blocks.   |  2019 Statistics

THE EAGLES LAST TIME OUT:  La Crosse volleyball team earned a 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-16,15-10) victory at North Park University (Ill.) Oct. 26. Liz Lansink led UWL with 22 kills while adding five blocks. Lansink hit .556 (22-2-36) overall.  Emma Lawrence finished with nine kills, two blocks and 15 digs. Laine Hoeffel added seven kills for the Eagles while Anna Rossner finished with five. The Eagles hit .222 (63-24-176) overall.  Abbey Fox recorded 35 assists while adding 12 digs. Sophie Quelle recorded two aces, four assists and a team-high 18 digs. LAST TIME THEY MET:   Kara Simonson set a career-high that helped propel UW-Stout past UW-La Crosse 3-1 Sept. 29, 2018. in WIAC volleyball action at Johnson Fieldhouse. Simonson collected 17 kills and started off the day with five kills in the opening 25-20 first set. She had two as the Blue Devils (8-8, 2-1 WIAC) dropped the second set, 25-14, but then recovered her game six kills in set three that Stout won, 25-19. Simonson closed out her day with four kills in a 25-17 win. In the three sets that Stout won, Simonson delivered a kill to finish off the set.   |  Game Story and Statistics



CONFERENCE & NATIONAL POLLS: The Blue Devils were picked to finish fifth in the WIAC this season, according to a preseason poll conducted by WIAC head coaches and sports information directors. UW-Eau Claire was projected to finish first, followed by UW-Whitewater; UW-La Crosse; UW-Stevens Point; UW-Stout; UW-Oshkosh; UW-River Falls; and UW-Platteville. | 2019 WIAC Preseason Poll | AVCA Top 25 Poll

UW-STOUT COACH MANDY TRAUTMANN: Coach Mandy Trautmann (35-22) is in her second season as the head coach of the Blue Devils. in her first season as head coach in 2018, Trautmann led the Blue Devils to home WIAC playoff berth, the first for the Blue Devils since 2004. Trautmann took over the Blue Devils after a season as an assistant coach. Prior to coming to Stout, Trautmann was the team captain for UW-Oshkosh in 2015, a season the Titans captured the WIAC regular season championship. Trautmann was a two-time first team all-WIAC selection in 2014 and 2015, and an honorable mention choice in 2013. She was named to the all-WIAC defensive team in 2013, 2014 and 2015. (Trautmann started the season with a 16-13 overall record)

QUICK HITS: The Blue Devils have six seniors, two juniors, six sophomores and seven freshmen on the 2019 roster...the team is made up of 11 players from Minnesota, six from Wisconsin and one each from Iowa and Illinois...assistant coach Pam Schroeder begins her 16h season with the Blue Devils, matching hockey assistant coach Greg Slupe as holding the longest active consecutive assistant coaching tenure with a Stout program.
