The Blue Devils and the Gusties have not met since the early 1980s. The Blue Devils are coming off a 27-0 loss at 11th ranked St. John's University, Sept. 1. The Gusties pulled away and took a 32-20 win at Martin Luther College, Sept. 1.

The Blue Devils are coming off the 2017 season where they finished 5-4 overall, and woke up the Division III football world when they defeated fourth-ranked St. Thomas, 25-22, Sept. 9 at Don & Nona Williams Stadium. the win  propelled the Blue Devils to 25th on the D3football.com Top 25. Stout moved up to 24th the following week, then jumped two spots to 22nd before a loss to UW-Platteville dropped Stout one spot to No. 23 and a loss to UW-Whitewater the following week put Stout in the receiving votes category. The last time Stout appeared in the poll was when they received votes for several weeks midway through the 2010 season and the last time Stout cracked the D3football Top 25 was during Week 5 of the 2005 season. Stout received votes in the first AFCA Division III Coaches Poll, then moved up to 25th during the second poll. The Blue Devils fell out of the AFCA's Division III Coach's Poll after the Platteville loss. LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: The Blue Devils could not get their offense in gear and dropped a 27-0 decision at St. John's University, Sept. 1 to open the season. Stout couldn't get into gear and 11th-ranked St. John's University scored twice in the first quarter, then added two more scores in the third quarter as the Johnnies rolled to a 27-0 victory Saturday. All four of St. John's (1-0) touchdowns came via the air as Jackson Erdmann threw for all four sc to three different players. St. John's scored opened the scoring at 4:02 of the first quarter as Erdmann finished off a 10-play drive with a 12-yard TD strike to Jared Streit. Erdmann, who finished with 241 passing yards, used two plays to get into the end zone just before the end of the quarter, hitting Blake Patrick with a 48 yard pass and struck paydirt with an 8-yard toss to Tommy Auger. Erdmann found Will Gillach for two scores in the third period, getting a 22-yard score at 6:13 and for 25 yards with 1:03 left in the period to close out the scoring. The Blue Devils, which started their first five drives inside the 20, finished with 213 total yards, but were held to 29 yards rushing. The Blue Devils never got into the red zone and only got as close as the St. John's 26 yards line on their final drive of the day. |  St. John's Story and Stats

LAST TIME OUT: GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:  It took some time for the Gustavus football team to find its footing Saturday in the season opener at Martin Luther College, but after trailing by two at halftime the Gusties made the necessary adjustments to outscore the Knights 14-0 in the final 30 minutes and came out on top 32-20, Sept. 1 in New Ulm, Minn. | Martin Luther Story and Stats

WHEN STOUT AND GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS LAST MET: The teams have not meet since the early 1980s. when the teams split in back-to-back seasons, with Stout winning in 1982 at St. Peter, Minn., 14-0. But Gustavus turned the tables the following year Sept. 10, 1983, in Menomonie, when Marc Illies hauled in a 29-yard TD pass from with seven seconds left in the game from QB Eric Lunde for a 13-6 win. Jim Alexander of Gustavus carried the ball 29 times for 123 yards rushing, as Gustavus tallied 299 yards of total offense, while Stout had 169 yards of offense with quarterback Glen Majszk scrambling for 62 of Stout's 136 rushing yards. The head coach for Gustavus Adolphus at the time was Dennis Raarup, who was an assistant football coach and member of the Stout physical education department from 1963-1968. Raarup had a Hall of Fame career at Gustavus from 1971-87.

THE SERIES: Gustavus Adolphus holds a 4-1 lead in the series. The Blue Devils defeated the Gustavus, 14-0, in 1982 in St. Peter, Minn., but Gustavus returned the favor the following year when they came to Menomonie to hand Stout a 13-6 defeat.  In the two team's first ever meeting in 1939 Gustavus won 39-0, while the Blue Devils set a mark for most punts in a game with 12. That Stout mark was matched in 2014 against Wartburg College. In the teams' first meeting, Gustavus won again in 1940, 37-0.

UW-STOUT: On paper, it would look like UW-Stout would have a lot of holes to fill after graduating 24 seniors last year, one of the largest group of graduating seniors in head coach Clayt Birmingham's eight year tenure. And while the Blue Devils will need to replace a lot of players - including nine defensive starters, - Birmingham said his squad returns athletes who have seen considerable time in rugged Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play, but not as a listed starter. This year's senior class, along with a solid junior class, will need to step in while the team develops depth they will need for the schedule which opens Saturday, Sept. 1 with a trip to traditional football powerhouse St. John's University. "We have talent, just not a lot of veteran talent," Birmingham said. "By losing so many seniors (last season), we lost depth."   2017 Statistics

THROWING THE BALL: The Blue Devils return their offensive line nearly intact, losing only one starter. Caleb Adams (Sr, Rochester, Minn) earned all-conference and all-region honors at guard.  Starters returning include tackle Thomas Roble (Jr, Carver, Minn), guard Justin Herbst (Jr, Park Falls) and center Bailey Roux (So, Rice Lake). The Blue Devils had the same starting lineup at offensive line in all nine games last season. At quarterback, Jay Alston (Sr, Rochester, Minn) completed 98 passes for 1473 yards with eight touchdowns, playing in eight games. Alston is currently 10th on the Blue Devil all-time passing list with 3301 career yards. J.Dan Sturgeon (Jr, West Lafayette, Ind) got the start against St. Thomas, and led the Blue Devils to a 25-22 win over the nationally-ranked Tommies, throwing a 77-yard TD on his first pass of the game, then getting the game winner with just over a minute left, for his third TD of the game. Freshman Sean Borgerding (Spring Valley) has worked his way up the depth chart.

CATCHING THE BALL: The Blue Devils will be inexperienced at catching the ball, but Birmingham believes that gap will be made up quickly. Tight ends Dustin Rondorf (Sr, Marengo, Ill) and Blake Purdy (So, Mondovi) each have collegiate receptions, as do running backs Keyshawn Carpenter (Sr, Evergreen Park, Ill) and Rayshawn Graham (Jr, Blue Island, Ill). Even quarterback Alston (two for 10 yards) and safety Levi Wolf (a 15 yard special teams reception) have more collegiate receptions than the vast of majority of Blue Devils wearing the WR tag. Noel Gonzalez (Sr, Waukegan, Ill), who has excelled as a return man, hauled in five passes last year for 67 yards and has six total collegiate receptions. Fellow return man Heaven Hunt (Jr, Somerset) did not have a reception last year, but returned 14 punts and three kickoffs. Parker Fossum (Fr, Chatfield, Minn), Levy Hamer (Fr, Chicago, Ill), Jacob Paul (Fr, Andover, Minn), Mason Graetz (So, River Falls), Tyler Seymour (Fr, Duluth , Minn), and Josh Halloran (So, Inver Grove Heights, Minn), along with a number of incoming freshman could very well line up at receiver.

RUNNING THE BALL: Rayshawn Graham (Jr, Blue Island, Ill) and Keyshawn Carpenter (Sr, Evergreen Park, Ill) both got carries last year at tailback. Graham led the team with 445 net rushing yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry, and earned second team all-conference honors, gaining 105 yards against UW-Platteville and 100 yards against UW-River Falls. Carpenter, one of the team's captains, ran for 97 yards and a pair of scores against UW-Eau Claire and averaged 3.9 yards per tote.  Josh Nitek (Fr, Blair), Nick Arguedas (Fr, Waterville, Minn) and Ahmad McClellan (Fr, Olympia Fields, Ill)
 could see action this year.

IN THE TRENCHES: The Blue Devils return their offensive line nearly intact, losing only one starter. Caleb Adams (Sr, Rochester, Minn) earned all-conference and all-region honors at guard.  Starters returning include tackle Thomas Roble (Jr, Carver, Minn), guard Justin Herbst (Jr, Park Falls) and center Bailey Roux (So, Rice Lake). The Blue Devils had the same starting lineup at offensive line in all nine games last season

A NEW DEFENSE: Defensively, the Blue Devils return only two starters - linebacker Luke Wilz (Jr, Manawa) and safety Levi Wolf (Sr, Elmwood). Wolf, one of three 2018 team captains, had a breakout year, matching a conference-high five interceptions, notching six pass break-ups and making 50 tackles, 24 solo. Birmingham said Wolf significantly stepped up his game in rushing defense. "Levi is an athletic player who plays the pass well," Birmingham said, "but impressed me was how well he come up and stopped the run." Wilz has been causing havoc for the opponent during his first two seasons at both outside linebacker and know inside linebacker, where last season he had three sacks, three pass break-ups, forced a fumble that was turned into a touchdown and was second on the team in tackles with 64, 40 solo.

WOLF'S INSTINCTS: Safety Levi Wolf, a second team all-conference pick, tied for the lead in the conference in interceptions last season with five. Wolf had two interceptions against St. Thomas, then stepped in front a UW-Stevens Point, returning it 28 yards for his first career pick-6. For the second time this season, Wolf recorded two interceptions in a game when he picked off two against UW-La Crosse. Wolf has a conference-best 101 return yards for interceptions. Wolf blocked a punt against Platteville that teammate Jed Schlegel scooped up and returned 47 yards for his first collegiate score. Wolf caught a 15-yard pass out of punt formation against St. Thomas.

KICKING GAME: Drew Pearson (Sr, Wausau) returns at kicker for his final year. Following an All-American season as a sophomore, Pearson was still the team's leading scorer last season with seven field goals and 18 extra-points. While Pearson's numbers weren't as prolific as the year before, he proved to still have the leg, kicking a 53-yarder against UW-Stevens Point. Pearson is currently 11th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list with 147 points. Pearson appeared on the first Fred Mitchell Award watch list. The award recognizes place kickers within the FCS, NCAA Divisions II and III, the NAIA and NJCAA. Pearson was one of 10 finalists for the award during his sophomore year.

PUNTING GAME: The punting spot is wide open with four-year and three-time all-conference punter Clark Riedel using up his eligibility. Riedel will work with the special teams as a student coach this fall. Senior transfer Shawn Magee (Sr, Rice Lake) will be the punter. Magee competed at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

MR. RELIABLE: Also adding stability to the special teams will be the return of long snapper Clay Dziekan (Sr, Mondovi) for his final season. Dziekan earned honorable mention all-conference honors last season.

CLIMBING THE LADDER: Blue Devil kicker Drew Pearson is currently 11th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list with 147 points. Quarterback Jay Alston is currently 10th on the all-time passing list with 3377 yards.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished fifth in the competitive WIAC last season and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish fifth this year. UW-Oshkosh is picked to finish first, UW-Whitewater second, UW-Platteville third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Stout fifth, UW-River Falls sixth, UW-Stevens Point seventh and UW-Eau Claire eighth. | WIAC Preseason Poll

WHO'S WHO: GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE: The Gusties finished fifth in the MIAC last season and the team is Gustavus Adolphus College is ranked No. 5 in this year's Preseason Coaches' Poll, having garnered 36 points in the balloting. Injuries derailed what appeared to be a promising 2017 campaign, which saw the Golden Gusties jump out to a 3-1 start to the year. Chiefly among those hit by the bug last season was quarterback Michael Veldman, who ranked among the top-five passers in the Conference with 143 completions for 1,931 passing yards and 18 scores, despite missing four games. Most significantly, Gustavus won twice as much as it lost with Veldman behind center, as the 6-foot-4 senior signal-caller registered a 4-2 record as a starter last year. | Gustavus Season Preview

BIG KICKOFF RETURNS: Noel Gonzalez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 5, 2016 at Stevens Point. The return was the longest return since Mike Bechtel returned a 98-yard kickoff return against UW-Whitewater, Oct. 14, 1995 on the Blue Devils' homecoming. Carlos Concepcion returned a kick 90 yards against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 23, 2010. Jesse Wendt, who holds the school single season record for kickoff return average, returned a kickoff 90 yards in 2004. Tony Beckham did not have any 90-plus yard returns, but in back-to-back seasons, the future NFL draftee returned an 88-yard kickoff and an 89-yard return in 2000 and 2001, respectively.

FIELD GOAL BLOCK & RETURN: During the 2015 season, Travis Shackleton blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Oct. 10, 2015, and Enzo Rosani scooped up the ball on the La Crosse 14, returning it 86 yards for a score. The blocked kick was Shackleton's first career block and the touchdown was Rosani's first collegiate TD. There was no mention in the UW-Stout, the WIAC or the NCAA record books for returning blocked field goal attempts. There is now a category in the Stout record book. After sending out a request to NCAA Division III sports information directors, the following list of blocked field goals was compiled.

PROMOTIONS PLANNED FOR 2018: The Blue Devils will host Community Day, Sept. 22; Youth Day, Sept. 29; Homecoming, Oct. 6; Military Appreciation Day, Oct. 27; and Senior Day, Nov. 3.

MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.

TAILGATING: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.

DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: UW-Stout's Don and Nona Williams Stadium got a facelift this summer with the installation of an updated surface. FieldTurf will installed the FieldTurf Revolution 360.  FieldTurf promotes this surface as having "optimal durability, resilience, and feel."  A padding/drainage mat will be added, as well as flushing the current drainage system to make sure the field sheds water as designed. The field's layout will be similar to the previous markings and will again include markings for high school hash marks. The S logo at midfield will be replaced by the new Blaze head logo. The stadium, which was opened during the 2001 season, last had the stadium turf replaced during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembled natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. At the time, the Wisconsin Badgers were the only Wisconsin college team that played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, every WIAC school has an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.

UP NEXT:The Blue Devils have the bye Sept. 15, then return to action Saturday, Sept. 22 when they open the home portion of their season by hosting California Lutheran University at 1 p.m. at Williams Stadium. This will be the first meeting between Stout and California Lutheran. The teams are slated to meet again next year in California.
