Falcons edge Blue Devils on the court

UW-River Falls 6, UW-Stout 3 | Southwest Minnesota State 9, UW-Stout 0

RIVER FALLS (September 23, 2018) - UW-River Falls tripped up UW-Stout 6-3 in a morning Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest, but the match could have gone the Blue Devils' way.

Two singles matches went out to three sets and two of the three doubles matches went out to an extra game,

At No. 2 doubles, Gabe Kelch and Kennedy Kleist def. Hannah Andress and Delanie Otto by a 9-8 score. But it went the other way for the Blue Devils at No. 3 doubles where Mariah Kent and Kayla Chamberlain were tripped up by Ellie Kreibich and Delaney Osmond, 9-8.

At No. 4 singles, Kelch came back after dropping the first set, 6-4, to Hannah Andress to knot the match with a 6-2 second set win. Kelch carried the momentum into the tie-breaker set with a 10-8 win.

At No. 5 singles, it was a similar scenario for the Blue Devils over the first two sets. Kent lost the first set to Kreibich, 6-0, but then stormed back for a 6-3 win to force the final set. The pair went long, with Kreibich winning the match 11-9.

Elizabeth Wahlquist, playing at No. 6 singles, bounced back from a first set 6-1 loss to Karli Helland, and forced extra games in set two, but fell 7-5.

The Blue Devils fell to 1-4 overall, 1-1 in the WIAC after losing a 9-0 decision to NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State University later in the day on the Falcons' courts. Playing at No. 3 singles, Kennedy Kleist forced the only three-set match, losing the first set, 6-3, but taking a 6-4 second set win. She fell in the tie-breaker set to Hanna Himmelman.

The Blue Devils will host UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. in a match that was originally scheduled for Sept. 19.
