MENOMONIE (September 22, 2018) - UW-Stout freshman quarterback
Sean Borgerding was an efficient 10-for-13 with a career-best 273 yards passing and four TD passes as the Blue Devils used the big play all afternoon to down visiting California Lutheran University 49-24 Saturday at Don and Nona Williams Stadium.
With the Blue Devils (2-1) trailing 3-0, Borgerding threw a 45-yard pass to
Levy Hamer with one minute left in the first period. Borgerding set up
Rayshawn Graham's one-yard dive at 8:35 in the second quarter when he found
Tyler Seymour for a 75-yard pass play. Borgerding hit Hamer with a 40-yard TD pass in the second half. Borgerding connected with Noel Gonzales for a 20-yard TD in the third quarter, then completed his day with a 11-yard pass to
Parker Fossum, who made a one handed grab in the corner of the end zone.
Graham had a solid day rushing the ball, carrying the ball 20 times for a career-best 172 yards, including a 65-yard scamper to the end zone in the second quarter. Graham also had a 51-yard tote in the fourth quarter to set up a one-yard TD by
Keyshawn Carpenter.
Stout finished the day with 547 total yards of offense, 263 running, 284 passing. The Blue Devils had eight plays of 20 yards or more. Levy hauled in four passes for 143 yards with the two TDs. The Blue Devils threw passes to five different receivers. The 547 yards of offense is the most for a Nlue Devil team since Stout rolled up 556 yards in a 63-0 win over Eureka College, Sept. 10, 2010.
The Kingsmen (2-1) had 347 yards of offense, 145 rushing, with Chris Anderson running for 127 yards on 24 carries, and 202 yards passing. Hayden Smith was 17-of-30 for all 202 yards, but was picked off twice, once by
Haydon Miller, and later by
Jason Dilly.
Levi Wolf finished the day with 14 tackles, four solo.
Dylan Peterson,
Aaron Wisecup and Dilly each recorded a sack.
The Kingsmen started the scoring on a 48-yard field goal by Christian Antezana with 1:57 left in the first, but Hamer gave the Blue Devils excellent field position with a 48-yard kickoff return to CLU 45. Two plays later, Borgerding connected with Hamer for a 45-yard score.
California Lutheran drove to the Stout 16 to open the second, but missed a field goal. Borgerding hit Seymour and the freshman played catch and run to the Lutheran 5. Tack on additional yardage for a facemask penalty and Graham ran in from the 2.
On first down from the Stout 35, Graham ripped off the 65-yard run, shedding would-be tacklers along the way to a 21-3 lead at 8:35 of the second period. The Kingsmen pulled to within 21-10 on an 18-play, 78-yard drive as Smith hit Tyler Riley for a 4-yard score
The Blue Devils scored on their first drive of the second half, a 7-play, 75-yard drive capped by Borgerding's 40-yard pass to Hamer for a 28-10 lead and Stout made it 35-10 minutes later. Borgerding kept the drive alive with a third down run of 28 yards. Three plays later, Borgerding found Gonzales in the end zone.
The Kingsmen put together another long drive, this one 10-plays for 63 yards and Anderson rushed from two yards out to make it 35-17. Cal Lutheran added a score in the fourth on a 25-yard pass play from Smith to Michael Magana. The Blue Devils closed out the scoring, going 75 yards in eight plays, highlighted by Graham's 51-yard run to the CLU 11. Carpenter hit the line four times to get the score with five minutes left.
