PLATTEVILLE (May 13, 2018) - That it was a wild, offensive weekend for UW-Stout and UW-Platteville would be an understatement as the two teams finished out their season by splitting a season-ending doubleheader, Platteville coming from behind to take a 12-11 first game win and Stout holding off the Pioneers 9-7 in the second game of the day.
The day opened with Stout scoring three runs in the top of the eighth inning to come-from-behind to capture a 14-13 win in a game that suspended from the previous day.
Over the four games this weekend, the two teams combined for 90 runs, 125 hits, 23 doubles, one triple, six home runs, 74 RBI, 37 walks, 50 strikeouts, 14 stolen bases, four double plays and 87 stranded runners. From first pitch until the first day was suspended was nearly eight hours and the teams played seven hours, 15 minutes on the second day.
In the opener Sunday, Platteville (10-30, 4-20 WIAC) came back from a 9-0 deficit to capture a 12-11 win, while in the second game Stout (10-27, 7-16 WIAC) never trailed, but held off the Pioneers as
Zach Carlson went the distance, but surrendered 15 hits for a 9-7 win, striking out nine, moving up to fifth on the UW-Stout all-time strikeout list with 131 career strikeouts.
In the first complete day of the game, Stout built a 9-0 lead over the first three innings, scoring twice in the first inning, four times in the second as
Jordan Wilson hit a three-run home run and three in the third.
The Pioneers put up three runs in the third inning, then pulled to within one run, 9-8, with a five run fourth inning. with Collin Mormann hitting a two run single and Josh Moses a two-run home run.
The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, but Platteville took the lead, 12-10, with a three-run seventh, with Moses doing much of the damage with a two-run double to center field. Stout added a run in the ninth, but that would be it.
Stout pounded out 19 hits, led by Wilson, who went 4-for-6.
Jack Hemsath was 3-for-5,
Kyle Hamilton 3-for-5 and
Ben Vanhove 3-for-4.
Kasey Bass and
Jon Krueger each had two hits.
The Pioneers finished with 12 hits, with Moses, Mormann, Mitchell Susa and Jonny Kelso each had two hits. Moses finished with four RBI.
The Blue Devils built a 4-0 lead in the second game, scoring a run in the second on
Hunter Merrill's lead-off home run, then added three runs in the third, getting RBIs from Hemsath,
Kasey Bass and Krueger.
Platteville got on the board in the third, and Stout countered the run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Wilson. The Pioneers tied the score at 5-5 with a four-run fourth, getting two RBI each from Ryan Vogel and Brennan Kearney.
Sam Waters stole home in the fifth to put Stout up 6-5, but a groundout RBI by Ross Krist knotted the game at 6 apiece.
Stout took a three-run lead in the eighth on an RBI double by Hemsath and an RBI outfield single by Merrill. Hemsath took advantage of an outfield error to score Stout's final run of the season. The Pioneers threatened in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run. Carlson ended the threat with a strikeout to get Stout out of the inning and the game.
Max Sires was was 4-for-5 lead Stout, which finished with 14 hits. Wilson, Hemsath, Merrill and Krueger each had two hits. The Pioneers rapped out 15 hits, with Krist going 3-for-5 and Brooks Chandler going 3-for-3. Mormann, Kelso and Brendon Refsteck each had two hits apiece.
Wilson finished 6-for-12 on the day, driving in four runs. Hemsath was 5-for-11 with four RBI. Krueger was 4-for-10. For the Pioneers, Mormann was 4-for-8 on the day with four RBI.

Over the four games, UW-Stout's
Jordan Wilson was 15-for-24 (.625), with nine runs scored an 11 runs batted in. Wilson had six doubles and one home run.

Platteville's Brooks Chandler hit .545 (6-11), Ross Krist and Josh Moses combined for 17 RBI, with Krist hitting .476 (10-21, 8 RBI) and Moses .471 (8-15, three doubles, home run, 9 RBI), Brendon Refsteck .428 (6-14, 3 RBI), Collin Mormann .357 (5-14, 5 RBI), and Jonny Kelso ,350 (7-20, 3RBI).
As a team, Platteville recorded 54 hits in 153 at-bats with 45 runs scored, 12 doubles and two home runs.
