MENOMONIE (May 1, 2018) - After about a month of winter weather and no home games, the UW-Stout baseball team finally got to play a double header on Nelson Field, but it was not a happy homecoming for the Blue Devils as UW-La Crosse swept the day, 8-5, 4-2, Tuesday.
La Crosse (20-9, 10-4 WIAC) took a 2-0 lead in the opener, scoring single runs in the first and third innings.
The Blue Devils (8-21, 5-13 WIAC) knotted the score in the fourth inning when
Jordan Wilson led off with a triple to right center. Wilson came home on
Jack Hemsath's single up the middle. Hemsath moved when
Jon Krueger drew a walk, then both runners advanced on
Ben Vanhove's sacrifice bunt. Krueger scored on
Kasey Bass's ground out and the score was tied.
Stout doubled their score in the sixth inning. Hemsath led off with a single, then, following a flyout, came home when Vanhove lifted his first home run of the season, driving the ball into the left field hill. After the Eagles scored a run in the seventh, Stout took a 5-3 lead inthe bottom of the inning when Hemsath plated
Tim Bott with a single up the middle.
The wheels fell partially off in the eighth inning when the Eagles scored four runs, two unearned, to take a 7-5 lead. La Crosse tacked on another run in the ninth.
Hemsath was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead Stout's 10-hit attack. The Eagles punched out 13 hits, with Brennan Schmitt going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
In the second game, the Eagles scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Stout's
Kasey Bass and
Jared Jarvensivu drove in runs in the sixth inning to pull Stout to within 3-2. Brady Stolzman scored Cal McClellan on a squeeze bunt in the eighth inning to give the Eagles the final 4-2 lead.
Stout out-hit the Eagles, 11-9, in the second game, with Jarvensivu going 3-for-4, while Wilson and Hemsath each had two hits. Schmitt and Shane Coker each had two hits for the Eagles.
Stout steps out off conference play this weekend when they travel to Bethel University, Sunday, May 6 for a pair of non-conference games. Stout will host La Crosse again, Tuesday, May 8 at 1 p.m.
