Iliopoulos, Diedrich lead sweep over Pointers, 11-0, 5-2

UW-Stout 11, UW-Stevens Point 0 | UW-Stout 5, UW-Stevens Point 2

MENOMONIE (April 28, 2018) - For the day, Mary Iliopoulos and Kyncaide Diedrich went a combined 13-of-15 at the plate, scored eight runs, drove in seven runs and stole six bases as UW-Stout swept UW-Stevens Point, 11-0, 5-2, Saturday at Alumni Field to stay in contention for the WIAC regular season title.

Over the two games, Iliopoulos was 8-for-9 at the plate, with a double and a triple, scored four runs, drove in three runs and was successful in four stolen base attempts. Diedrich was not far behind, going 5-for-6 with a walk, hitting a double and home run, drove in four runs and scored four runs. Diedrich stole two bases in two attempts.

Because the conference game was moved to Menomonie from Stevens Point due to field conditions, Stout was the visitor in the scorebook, batting first.

In the opener, Stout (21-6, 9-3 WIAC) scored in every inning except the fifth inning. Beth Wood drove in Iliopoulos in the first inning and Diedrich hit a two-run blast to left center in the second to give Stout a 3-0 lead. Alicia Meyer plated Iliopoulos with a double in the third. In the fourth, Diedrich drove in a run with a double, stole third, then came home on Rachel Thomas' single. Iliopoulos drove in Diedrich in the sixth with a double. The Blue Devils put up four runs in the seventh inning as Diedrich drove in a run, Thomas walked in a run and Iliopoulos drove in two runs.

Ilipoulos was 5-for-5 in the game and Diedrich was 4-for-4. Thomas finished with two RBI and Melea Bruns was 2-for-4.

Beth Wood got the win, going six innings, striking out two.

The runs didn't come quite so easily in the second game for the Blue Devils, but they strung them together when they needed them.

The Blue Devils opened the game with a two-run first. Alicia Meyer drove in a run on a muffed sacrifice fly, scoring Kaylee Francis. Illiopoulos scored from second on the outfield error.

The Pointers (11-24, 0-12 WIAC) came back in the bottom half of the inning to score their first run of the day on an RBI by Lauren Luedtke.

Stout got the run back in the second inning on a Francois RBI single.

The teams played even until the Pointers pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a bases loaded wild pitch. But the Blue Devils would get out of the inning, gunning a runner down at home and leaving two Pointers on base.

Wood drove in two runs with a double in the seventh and Melea Bruns, who came on in the top of the seventh, forced three straight outs to record the save.

Sommer Kunstmann pitched five complete innings for the win, striking out three and walking one. Bruns went two innings, not allowing a hit.

Iliopoulos was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Diedrich was 1-for-2. Francois was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Stout will step out of conference play Sunday, April 29 when they travel to eighth ranked St. Thomas. Stout, at 9-3, is a full game behind UW-Whitewater, which is 10-2 in conference play after splitting with UW-Eau Claire today. Whitewater plays at UW-La Crosse Sunday, April 29 and the Blue Devils are slated to wrap up conference play Monday, April 30 at UW-Oshkosh. Whitewater holds the tie-breaker over Stout.
