ROCHESTER, Minn (February 24, 2018) - The UW-Stout softball team opened the 2018 season with a 9-8 win over eighth-ranked St.Catherine in the opening game of the Luther College Tournament at Rochester Community Technical College Saturday. In the second game of the tournament, Stout lost 5-3 to ninth-ranked Luther College.
After falling behind 8-4 by allowing three runs in the top of the sixth, the Blue Devils (1-1) put together a five-run sixth inning to get the win.

Renee Murphy led off with a ground-rule double and
Katelyn Schobert followed up with a walk. Freshman
AJ Klostermann rapped out a ground-rule double of her own to score Murphy. Transfer
Mary Iliopoulos drove in Schobert with a single and moved Klostermann to third. Senior captain
Rachel Thomas brought home Klostermann on a sacrifice bunt to pull Stout to within 8-7.
Illiopoulos scored when
Kyncaide Diedrich reached on an error to tied the score at 8 apiece.
Kaylee Francois drove Diedrich home with the eventual game-winning hit, a single to center field.
Meghan Kelly, who worked the final two innings and earned the win, allowed a two-out hit, but forced a pop-up to seal the win.
St. Catherine (1-1) opened the game with a run in the top of the first, but Stout answered back in the bottom of the second when Iliopoulos notched her first Stout RBI by driving in Murphy, who had reached on a lead-off single.
The Wildcats scored three runs in the third inning, but Stout tied the game in the fourth with a three-run inning when
Alicia Meyer, Klostermann and Iliopoulos drove in runs, Meyer and Iliopoulos with doubles.
St. Kate's scored a single run in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead, then used a three-run sixth to jump out 8-4.
Iliopoulos was 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored to lead Stout's offensive charge, which tallied 11 hits. Klostermann was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Murphy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Wildcats stroked out 13 hits, with Anna Hinderaker, Kyulei Macziewski, Ashley Sis, Krista Flugstad and Sammie Galvez each getting two hits.
Kelly earned the win, scattering three hits. Her lone strikeout led off the seventh inning.
In the second game with the host Norse, Stout opened the scoring when Francois drove in a run on a groundout. The Norse took a 3-0 lead when Annie See drove in three runs on a bases loaded double.
Stout tied the score with a two-run second inning when
Rachel Thomas drove in Iliopoulos and Murphy with a two-out single. Luther scored single runs in the second and fourth innings.
Stout is off until they are scheduled to play 10 games at the PFX Spring Games March 11-16 in the Orlando, Fla., area.
