Titans use fourth quarter push to down Blue Devils

OSHKOSH (November 10, 10`8) - UW-Stout gave defending WIAC champion UW-Oshkosh a battle, but the Titans pulled away in the fourth quarter Saturday for a 27-13 win over the Blue Devils.

Fourteen points in a three-minute span turned a seven-point lead into a 27-6 advantage for UW-Oshkosh midway through the fourth quarter in the regular season finale for both teams.

UW-Stout's Josh Nitek found the end zone with a three-yard touchdown run with 3:06 left in the game to cut the lead to 14, but the Blue Devils offense couldn't get any closer than that. That was their only touchdown of the game, as the Titans held them to two field goals through the first three quarters.

The second of those two field goals by Drew Pearson came from 34 yards out and tied the game at six with 7:43 remaining in the second quarter.

UW-Oshkosh's Joe Franks scored a one-yard rushing touchdown with under two minutes left in the first half to restore the Titans' lead.

Franks ran in for another score in the fourth quarter as part of the 14-point swing. Titans quarterback Steven Makinen also hit Dom Todarello with a two-yard touchdown pass in the fourth.

The Blue Devils (5-5, 3-4) favored a pass-heavy attack in their regular season finale. Quarterback Sean Borgerding completed 22 of 43 passes for 215 yards. The Titans (6-4, 4-3) had two interceptions. The freshman quarterback concluded his first collegiate season by throwing for 2086 yards, going 149 of 279 with 14 TDs and nine interceptions.

Parker Fossum had eight catches for 77 yards and Levy Hamer had seven receptions for 62 yards, finishing the season with 997 receiving yards for the season, the most by a Stout player in a single season since Scott Wojcik had 1002 yards in 1997. Combined with kickoff and punt return yardage, Hamer concluded the season with 1401 all-purpose yards.

Rayshawn Graham carried the  ball 13 times for 56 yards, while Nitek finished with 53 rushing yards, a collegiate-best. .

Makinen had a big day for UW-Oshkosh, finishing 18 of 26 for 283 yards. Riley Kallas hauled in 100 receiving yards.

The Blue Devils finished in fourth place in the WIAC.



OSHKOSH (November 10, 2018) - UW-Oshkosh broke open a close game with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Titans defeated UW-Stout 27-13 Saturday in the season finale for both teams.

The teams went into the fourth quarter with Oshkosh leading 13-6, but the Titans (6-4, 4-3 WIAC) turned a couple of turnovers into scores to take a 27-6 lead and the eventual win. Stout (5-5, 3-4 WIAC) added a score in the waning minutes when Josh Nitek scored from three yards out for the final score.

Oshkosh scored early in the first quarter on a five yard run by JP Peerenboom, and blocked extra point and the Titans led 6-0. Two field goals by Drew Pearson tied the game for Stout midway through the second period, but the Titans added a one yard run by Joe Franks with just over a minute to play in the first half to carry a 13-6 lead into the locker room.

Oshkosh finished with 407 total yards of offense, to Stout's 354.
