UW-Stout 3, Trine University 0
MENOMONIE (October 26, 2018) - The UW-Stout (1-0-0, 0-0-0) hockey team opened their 2018-19 season with a home showdown against Trine University (0-1-0, 0-0-0) at the Fanetti Community Center. The Blue Devils took the season opener with a score of 3-0 as two Blue Devils found the back of the net for their first career goals.
Both teams came out on the ice fired up as both the Blue Devils and Thunder were playing their season opener. Stout and Trine were feeling each other out as play was back and forth for most of the first period. With 10:46 left to play in the first period, Blue Devil's
Adam Kresl saw a breakaway chance, only to get denied by Trine's goalie. After the breakaway, Trine was assessed a penalty as Henry Hearon hooked Kresl on the breakaway. The Thunder killed off the penalty after Stout had scoring chances.
Both teams went into the locker room in the first intermission without scoring a goal. Although the first period saw no goals, there were five penalties called in the first period, four of the penalties were called in the final four minutes.
As back and forth play continued for six minutes, the Blue Devils finally got on the board to gain the lead. Stout's
Conner Valesano took a shot near the slot and used the pipe to score the goal.
Alex Bowe and
Logan Nelson got the assists on the score.
At the 18 minute mark of the second period, the Blue Devils would go on the penalty kill. But that didn't stop Blue Devil's
Jack Cernohous from scoring a shorthanded goal. It is Cernohous' first goal of his career.
Alex Toscano and
Alex Bowe got the assists on the shorthanded goal to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Blue Devils.
In the third period,
Trent Olson took a shot from the point, hit the pipe, and scored a goal to give Stout a lead of 3-0. It is Olson's first career goal as a Blue Devil. The goal was assisted by
Gavin Smith and
Raphael Gosselin.
After the Olson goal, Stout sent a player to the box after a five minute major penalty was called with six minutes to go in the game. At the 3:05 mark, Trine pulled their goalie and were skating six on four for almost the rest of the game. The Blue Devils killed off the five minute major and went off to get the victory with a score of 3-0.
In his first career game as a Blue Devil,
Brady Meyers stopped all 22 shots from the Thunder, earning him the shutout. It is Stout's first shutout since December 10, 2016 as the Blue Devils defeated St. Olaf.
The Thunder's Brett Young finished the game with 33 saves in net. The shots favored the Blue Devils 36-22.
Stout looks to continue this momentum tomorrow as they take on Aurora University on Saturday, October 26 at the Fanetti Community Center.
