Blue Devil final minutes rally falls just short

UW-Stevens Point 68, UW-Stout 65

MENOMONIE (January 6, 2018) - Sam Ortmann scored UW-Stout's final eight points of the game to pull the Blue Devils to within one point of UW-Stevens Point, but the Pointers staved off the Blue Devils for a 68-65 win on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse Saturday.

The Pointers (8-5, 2-0 WIAC) scored their final 10 points from the free throw line, not missing an attempt in 10 chances in the final 1-minute, 25-seconds.

Ortmann hit a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to pull Stout (6-7, 0-2 WIAC) to within 64-60. The Pointers' MJ Delmore pushed the lead back to six with a pair of charity shots. Ortmann answered again with a layup 12 second later to cut the lead back down to four, then, following a Stevens Point turnover, rattled a 3-point bucket six seconds later to pull the Blue Devils to within 66-65.

The Blue Devils still had a chance to tie the game, but a 3-point attempt was blocked by Brett Tauber and the Pointers regained the ball to seal the win.

Ortmann finished the night with 14 points. Isaac Elliott led the Blue Devils with a game-high 22 points. Zach Dahl had 13 points and Joe Duty 12.

Nate Dodge led the Pointers with 14 points. Cannon O'Heron fiished with 12 and Tauber had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, plus three blocked shots.

The Blue Devils held the lead for much of the first half, jumping out to an 11-3 lead over the first three minutes. Elliott scored nine points, had a steal and an assist to give Stout a 20-11 lead at the 13 minute mark. The Pointers cut the lead and took a 22-20 lead at 9:39. The Blue Devils built a small lead, but the Pointers grabbed the lead back at the three minute mark, 30-28. Duty tied the score at 30 apiece, but two free throws by Tauber gave the Pointers a 32-30 halftime lead.

While Stout would tie the game twice in the second half, they were never able to grab the lead back.

Stout shot 23 of 55 (41.8 percent) from the floor, 9 of 22 (40.9) from the 3-point line and 10 of 13 (76.9) from the line. The Pointers were 23 of 47 (48.9) from the floor, 7 of 23 (30.4) from beyond the arc and 15 of 19 (78.9) from the line. Stevens Point hauled in 34 rebounds to Stout's 25.

Stout will hit the road for two games next week, traveling to UW-Oshkosh, Wednesday, Jan. 10 and to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 13.
