Blue Devil put the wraps on the conference season

UW-Stevens Point 4, UW-Stout 1 | UW-Stevens Point 5, UW-Stout 4

STEVENS POINT (May 6, 2017) - UW-Stout did not go down without a fight.

Trailing 4-2 to UW-Stevens Point and heading into the ninth inning, the  Blue Devils scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, only to see the Pointers win the game, 5-4, in walkoff fashion Saturday in Stout's final contest of the season.

After dropping the first half of the doubleheader, 4-1, the Blue Devils (10-27, 6-14 WIAC) twice led in the nightcap. After three scoreless innings, Matt Emmer led off the fourth with a double, then came home on Sam Waters' single to take a 1-0 lead. The Pointers (18-16, 11-9 WIAC) tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but Stout bounced back to take a 2-1 lead when  Reid Akerman drove in Ben Vanhove on a single to left field.

The Pointers would take the 4-2 lead with a three-run sixth inning. Ryan Stanicek, who would came back to haunt the Blue Devils in the ninth, led off with a home run and Tommy Duddleston and Tyler Thomka each drove in a run.

The Blue Devils would tie the contest in the top of the ninth. Pinch hitter Jack Hemsath singled up the middle, then following a pop up, moved to second on Akerman's single to center. Emmer plated Hemsath and moved Akerman to third with a double. Jordan Wilson's sacrifice fly brought home Akerman to knot the score.

Ben Gerber led off the Pointers' ninth with a single, then stole second. He moved to third on a groundout. Gerber was cut down at home on the next play on Kyle Mrozinski's fielder's choice. But Mrozinski moved to second on a wild pitch and Stanicek doubled to center for the Pointer win.

In the opener, Tyler Christensen suffered his first loss of the season, surrendering two runs in the second and two in the sixth. Christensen struck out five and walked two in going seven innings.

The Blue Devils' sole run of the game came in the seventh inning when Noah Brown scored on Kasey Bass' fielders choice.

The Pointers outhit Stout 8-6. Popham was 3-for-4 for the Pointers and Iloncale was 2-for-4. Clint Rose had two RBI, but went hitless, driving in runs on a fielders choice and a sacrifice bunt.

The games were the final games for seniors Brown, Christensen and Derek Graves.

The Pointers earned a berth into the WIAC Baseball Championship as the fourth seed. Stout finished the season fifth in the WIAC.
