UW-La Crosse 3, UW-Stout 2
LA CROSSE (April 22, 2017) - UW-Stout took advantage of several UW-La Crosse miscues to win the conference opener, 4-1, but the Eagles held off the Blue Devils 3-2 in the second game to claim a split Saturday at the North Campus Field.
The Eagles (23-11, 7-3 WIAC) made several mistakes and the Blue Devils (15-15, 4-2 WIAC) took advantage in the opener.
Stout played small ball to score first in the top of the third.
Katelyn Schobert opened the inning with a bunt single, her second bunt single in two days. Schobert moved to second on
Rachel Thomas' single, then both moved into scoring position on
Kyncaide Diedrich's sacrifice bunt.
Following an out,
Heather Bol reached on an infield throwing error that allowed both Schobert and Thomas to score and Stout led 2-0.
Stout struck again in the fourth inning.
Kim Jablonski reached on a one out single, then moved on
Megan Hultgren's single. Jablonski was forced out on a fielder's choice, but Hultgren moved to third when Thomas reached on an infield error, then came home on a wild pitch.
The Eagles got on the board in the fourth inning on Grace Mindrup's sacrifice fly, but that would be the only pitch starting pitcher
Beth Wood would give up.
Stout added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Wood led off with a single and Bol drew a walk. Both advanced on
Kaylee Francois' groundout and Wood eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Eight different Blue Devils notched one hit in the game. The Eagles were charged with three errors, while the Blue Devils had a pair.
La Crosse scored first in the nightcap when Mindrup recorded her second sacrifice fly of the day, this one coming in the bottom of the first inning.
The Blue Devils tied the game in the fifth inning. Diedrich laced a two-out single, then scored from first on Wood's single. La Crosse countered in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an infield error with two outs, then took a 3-1 lead on Stephanie Cole's RBI single in the sixth inning.
The run would prove valuable for the Eagles as Stout rallied in the top of the seventh. Thomas drew a one-out walk, then scored when Diedrich's chopper to the pitcher was thrown away and what would prove to be the final 3-2 score.
Diedrich was 2-for-4 and Bol was 2-for-3 for the Blue Devils. Cole was 4-for-4 and Brittany Baldwin was 3-for-4 for the Eagles.
Stout will be at UW-Platteville, Sunday, April 23 with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
