Women's Basketball hands out team awards


MENOMONIE (April 12, 2017) - Jenna Goldsmith (Sr, St. Anthony, Minn/St. Anthony Village) and Kyncaide Diedrich (So, Athens) were selected the offensive and defensive most valuable players, respectively, of the 2016-17 UW-Stout women's basketball team.

Both Goldsmith and Diedrich earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) honorable mention selections this winter.

Goldsmith scored in double digits in all 14 conference games, finishing the season averaging 13.4 points overall per game, and 15.4 points in conference games only. Overall, Goldsmith ranked fifth in the WIAC in scoring, while averaging a team-best 6.9 rebounds to rank fifth. Goldsmith was second in the league in blocked shots with 46. Goldsmith wrapped up her four-year career with 1001 career points, good for 10th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Goldsmith was a three-time all-WIAC selection.

Diedrich made the move from shooting guard to point guard and led the WIAC in assists, tallying 95 for a league-leading 3.80 per game. Diedrich shared team scoring honors with Goldsmith, averaging 13.4, good for fifth in the WIAC. Diedrich was second on the team in rebounds, averaging 6.2 boards per game, ranking eighth in the WIAC. Diedrich led the team in defensive rebounds, pulling down 4.8 of opponent's missed shots. She was second on the team in steals, nabbing 1.5 per game.

On a team made up of eight first year players, freshmen players carried away several team awards. Emily Jacques (Oshkosh/West) was selected as Rookie of the Year, Sammi Hayes (Colby) Most Improved Player, Courtney Oleson (Altoona) the Spirit Award and Becky Fesenmaier (Spring Valley) and McKenna McVey (Elk Mound) shared the Sixth Player Award. Fesenmaier also worked her way to the Hustle Award.

Shannan Watkins (So, Hoover, Ala), who missed a good portion of the season due to injury, and Anna Brown (Jr, Wausau/West) shared the Sieze Excellence Award. Diedrich, Brown and Fesenmaier received the Coaches Award.
