MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (March 7, 2017) - It's not that UW-Stout didn't hit the ball, it's the Blue Devils couldn't seem to string the hits together at the right time and Augsburg College took both ends of a doubleheader, 5-1, 7-4, at US Bank Stadium Tuesday night.

The Blue Devils (2-4) stranded seven runners in the opening game, leaving at least one runner on base in six of the seven innings in a 5-1 loss. In the nightcap, Stout stranded six runners, again stranding at least one runner in five innings in the 7-4 loss.

In the opener, Augsburg (4-4) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Josh Marlowe hit a home run off the curtain in right field. The game settled into a pitcher's dual for the next three innings between the Auggies Jamie Kaye and Stout's Max Sires.

The Auggies got to Sires, the reigning WIAC pitcher of the week, in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits, with Clayton Bodine's two run single highlighting the offensive effort and a 5-0 lead.

Stout finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tim Bott led off with a double, then advanced to third on Joel Hollow's fly out to right field. Bott scored on Kyle Hamilton's sacrifice fly.

Sires took the loss, going five innings, surrendering six hits - four in the fifth - and five earned runs. He had a walk and a strikeout. Kaye allowed five hits and struck out six, four times striking out the final batter in the inning.

The Auggies' Marlowe was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Stout finished the game with five hits to seven for the Auggies.

Augsburg took the lead first in the late night second game when Eric Olheiser's double off the fence scored Bodine from first in the second inning.

The Blue Devils answered back in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Reid Akerman led off with a double off the right field wall, then advanced to third on Riley Schmitt's double. Akerman came home to tie the score on Noah Brown's groundout and Schmitt advanced to third. Schmitt came home on Jordan Wilson's sacrifice fly and Stout led 2-1.

The Auggies tied the game in the fourth, taking advantage of a Stout error. Bodine reached on an error and eventually came home on Mike Snow's sacrifice fly.

Stout grabbed the lead back in the top of the fifth when Brown hit a two-out double, then came home on Wilson's single through the right side.

Augsburg got to starter Luke Eide in the when Jack Duffy hit a three-run, no-doubt home run to left field and took a 5-3 lead.

Stout pulled to within one in the sixth when Ryan Connor reached on a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Matt Emmer, moved to third on Sam Waters' groundout and scored on Ben Vanhove's slice through the right side of the Augsburg defense.

Three pitchers worked the sixth inning for Stout and the trio combined to give up two runs on three hits, but Robert Pilz did work out of a bases loaded jam. The Blue Devils went down in order to close the game in the seventh inning.

Each team cracked out eight hits, but Stout committed three errors. Rhett Hebig was 2-for-4 for the Augies with an RBI. Duffy had the one hit for three RBI. Akerman was 2-for-4 for Stout. Wilson recorded two RBI.

Eide took the loss, working five innings, giving up five hits and five runs, three earned, and striking out four while walking two. The Auggies Jacob Kari went six inning, striking out seven and giving up eight hits and the four eraned runs.

The Blue Devils return to action when they travel to Fort Myers, Fla., where they will play seven games from Sunday, March 12 through Saturday, March 18. Stout opens the spring break trip by playing New York University, March 12 at 3 p.m.
