Bethel University 8, UW-Stout 0
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn (February 27, 2017) -
Sam Waters drove in the game-winning run to give UW-Stout a 1-0 win in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game, but the Blue Devils could not repeat the magic and Bethel University won the second game 8-0 Monday in Stout's season opener at US Bank Stadium.
With the first game scoreless heading into the bottom of the seventh,
Reid Akerman drew a lead-off walk, then moved to second when pinch hitter Kyle Hamliton laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt on the third base line.
Ben Vanhove drew a walk to put runners on first and second. An infield out by
Jordan Wilson advanced the runners to second and third, setting up Waters.
Playing in his first collegiate game, Waters sliced a 1-0 pitch into shallow right field to score Ackerman.
Max Sires went the full seven innings, scattering five hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Sires stranded five Bethel base runners, including a runner at third in the top of the first.Â
The Blue Devils (1-1) recorded four hits, with
Riley Schmitt getting two. The Royals' Joey Frederickson was 2-for-2.
The second game game did not go so well for the Blue Devils. Stout committed two errors in the second inning and allowed six runs in the inning. Â The Royals added a run in both the third and sixth innings.
Bethel's Michael Bohlke and Jake Marsh combined to allow Stout only one hit, that coming from Akerman in the third inning. The Royals (2-1) scattered seven hits with lead-off hitter Bryce Marquardt going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Blue Devils return to US Bank Stadium, Tuesday, Feb. 28 to face Hamline University at 9:30 pm.
