MENOMONIE (February 18, 2017) - UW-Stout's season came to a crashing halt as UW-Superior took a 4-2 win to force a 20-minute mini-game and the Yellowjackets turned that into an overtime 1-0 win Saturday at the Fanetti Community Center. With the win, the Yellowjackets advance to the semi-final round of the WIAC Tournament and will play at UW-Stevens Point, Feb. 24-25.
The Yellowjackets' (8-17-2) Anton Svensson scored a hat trick in the opener Saturday, starting off the action with a goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first period.
The Blue Devils' (12-13-2)
Connor Bump scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 13:06 of the second second period.
Svensson struck again, this time at 6:35 of the third and Liam Blais made the score 3-1 at 9:57 of the third. Stout's
Connor Valesano scored with an extra attacker on the ice with 48 seconds remaining in the game to pull Stout to within 3-2. Svensson scored the final goal of the game in an empty net with 26 seconds left and it was time to prepare for the mini-game.
After the ice was resurfaced and line-ups were set, the teams played to a 20 minute, 0-0 draw, forcing overtime. And the 20-minute, sudden death overtime period went past the halfway mark before Bruno Birzitis scored on a breakaway.
The mini-game only serves as a tie-breaker in a two-game series. No scores or statistics count.
In the game that does count, the Blue Devils'
Spencer Viele recorded 30 saves and Kyle Miller recorded 27 saves for the Yellowjackets.
